Actually those two are interesting, as we have a modern replica of the former in our bathroom, made by a company called Heritage, and the latter we'll be having installed in our new kitchen. Like you, we live in an old house and like traditional things.

However, I certainly don't remember them from the first time round...

Had a larder in this house once but it was converted to a boiler...wasnt big... Ladt house had a big one and my parents house had one.. She had a mangle too and my grans house in aberdeen still had the wash house in garden with the boiler and tubs.mangles etc. Used to take all bloody day to do laundry. Her toilet was on the landing and shared. No bath. No kitchen, just a press.. No running hotvwater., just a gas geyser. A lovely flat it was too built of granite near holburn st. Police box opposite too lol

I remember them well. The toilet was a short walk down the garden, the larder,or the cold stone was a kind of flag stone box outside by back door. I was so glad when both moved inside. The thing i enjoyed was bathing in an old tin bath by the open fire, toasting bread on toasting fork, handing toast back to my mum ,she would spread jam on it and pass it back to me in the bath. Oh when we were lads. Feel a Python sketch coming.

I remember my early days at primary school and the desks still had holes in them to take the ink wells for use with nib pens .
My dad used to make a big clootie dumpling with threepenny bits and sixpences inside at Christmas .
You could buy quite a lot with a sixpence then ( 2 1/2 pence in todays money IIRC )
We were brought up in a large four bedroom house and I remember when there was a coal fire burning in every room . My dad later blocked them all off and it was bliddy freezing in the winter . We had to scrape the frost off the inside of the windows to see outside

All the local villages had their own bakeries, the smell was wonderful. No shop out front ,or stainless steel, ovens etc, just small side entrance doors, old brick ovens. Each was known for specials, Quakers yard bakery for the Swansea loaf, Ystrad Mynach for the rolls etc.

Aye my desk had that too..we started using the damned contraptions initially... Being left handed and the nibs being right handed meant i scratched like a chicken and got belted several times a day for it... Teachers were old maids and viscious with it. Cant remambercwhen they were removed but it was a happy day.... Still write like a chicken though

Virtually everything, apart from the independence of India and the opening of the Kariba Dam.

    Some others:

foot X-ray machines in shoe shops; bread delivery vans; electric milk delivery wagons guided by a 'tiller'; 'bubble' cars; 'bobbys' on the beat; 3-wheel Scammel trucks at railway stations; pig bins; gypsies selling pegs for washing lines; fish and chips wrapped in newspaper; electrical plugs which fitted into light sockets; large bulb fairy lights; Lyon's corner shops; railway station platform tickets; bus conductors; liquid medicine dispensed in glass bottles, wrapped in paper and sealed with sealing wax; ointment in lead tubes; mail delivered twice a day; cashiers in cash booths in shops; pneumatic cash and change delivery systems; overhead rail cash and change delivery systems in shops; having to draw the curtains if you wanted to watch TV in the daytime; the little white dot that remained for a minute or two after switching off the TV; telephones with a dial; dog licences; dog shit on the pavements; light switches that looked like a breast with a toggle nipple; when you could have pots, pans and electrical appliances repaired; the Black and White minstrel show; when TV finished at 23:00; Wimpy bars; Fry's 'Five Boys' chocolate bars; etc. etc. ......

You're as bad (or old) as me Barry!

    I remember all that lot.
