You have a tough decision finding a DAC for £500 as there are so many of the buggers to choose from especially if you consider second hand aswell. It's like trying to choose a digital camera, there are a vast array on the market and they are all surpassed by new technology within 6 months. I suppose you could say you have to dive in sometime acknowledging this and maybe a current £500 DAC will be all you need and keep you happy for a good while.

I have heard a good many DACs and have constantly been surprised at how they have moved on from the good old days when they only resided in a CD player but I would say the significant improvements only come every couple of years. It's a pity the really good stuff is so expensive!

Personally if I were ever to go back to digital I would definitely not use a CD player but would use something like this
    http://www.innuos.com/en/catalog/go/zen-mini-mk2-std

And lash it to a DAC of your choice.

If you ever want to hear why I go on about DAVE I can arrange for you to come and have a listen.
Have you heard this DAC in your own system, though? Have you compared it to other DACS in the same system? If not, how do you know that it is DAVE that is the cause of the wonderful sound? Could it not be that it is just a very good system and that any competent digital set up will sound wonderful through it?

I look at some of these DACS and the build cost does not seem to be related at all to the asking price. That bothers me.

As for having a listen, you know me, I am always up for having a listen to anything. I have some time off work in the first couple of weeks of March if you fancy doing something then?

I have heard other DACs in the same system so I can judge what DAVE is doing compared to them.
I will try and organise something for March 10th or 11th if I can.

Lottery win Dacs would be Chord Dave or Metrum Pavane.
Very different technologies and a lot of moolah so would need a long audition of both.

Considered upgrading my modded Young dac in the past, but resisted as theres something to be said for being happy with what you have, and really its 'good enough'.
Next step dac wise is one of the two heavy hitters above, just as and when.

Now, wheres my lottery numbers again...?
    AC POWER
Hardwired 10kVA balanced mains powering entire system
    AMPS
Meridian 557 power Amp (Modded) / PS Audio BHK Preamp (Modded)
    SPEAKERS
    Wharfedale Evo 4.4
    DAC
    PS Audio Directstream (Modded)
    TURNTABLE
Pro-Ject X8 balanced output via XLR / Ortofon Quintet Blue cartridge
    PHONOSTAGE
Pro-Ject DS3 B balanced Input (TT and Phonostage powered by Pro-Ject Power box RS2 linear psu)
    DIGITAL
OPPO 203 (Modded: Linear PSU, i2s output to Dac) - Roon Endpoint, HDMI input used for all things Streaming/ PS5 /AppleTV ... also good for movies apparently?
    MUSIC PLAYBACK
Tweaked AP-Linux based Roon Server into Oppo 203 as Roon endpoint
    Ipad Roon Remote.
Apple Music/ YouTube via AppleTV, fed to Dac via Oppo HDMI input/i2s output to Dac.
    SPEAKER CABLES
Biwired: Duelund DCA10GA (Bass) Duelund DCA16GA (mid & treble) Duelund 12DCA used as jumpers (On
"Blackcat Cable" Chris Sommivigo's advice - yup, even with biwire it sounds better - and it does)
    INTERCONNECTS
All Balanced: Ghost+ recording studio XLR cables

Your right Gary they are expensive but certainly not the most expensive out there? I have listened to DACs for a number of years now and they are now getting very good indeed.

    A lottery win would help

It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Had a model of one of those. Didnt have lock switch. Might have been the A version. Was indeed good for the money. Still preferred my buffer to it.

Martin, well over your budget but well worth saving for is the Mytek Brooklyn. I recently got one and it really has been a game changer for me. Never thought digital could sound this good.
“Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio”
