Default Bose 9 pin to speaker connections - is there a hack?

Asking this on behalf of my managing director, who is having a nightmare with an inherited Bose system and its many bits.

He has a Bose sub/power amp with a 9 pin speaker output - from what I can see, the cable that would connect to the 9 pin socket would, at some point along its length, turn into two speaker cables, terminating in the odd and unique Bose speaker connections.

He has the speaker connections and very short pieces of cable (noting worth speaking of, to be honest), but does not have the 9 pin ended cable from which to connect said speakers.

Would a normal 9-pin connector work if he were to strip down a male-to-female RS232 cable? And how would that cable be wired?

Oddball question, I know, but he's trying to avoid spending mega-bucks on importing the kosher cable from the USA.

Moderators - please feel free to move this to the appropriate area if this one is not correct.
