Why not? There's crazier stuff than that around already.

Or does it all depend on cartridge and headshell type.

    Does it matter?
Depends on the cart, if it comes with nuts and bolts use them. If that is the case the nuts will fit into the slots in the body of the cart. If it doesn't have any - used ones sometimes come with no hardware - then I guess it depends if you have the right bits and bobs kicking around that fit.

I recently had to raid my own stash of cart bits to fit a brand new cart for a friend, no nuts in the packaging and none I had would fit, so I ended up nuts at the top - a right royal pain.

The best type to work with/set up is carts with threaded inserts, so the bolt screws down into that.
    Regards Neil

Agreed, as long as you use the correct length fastener, or you will damage the cartridge.

On mine the nuts are on top because that's how the cart was designed to be fitted - there isn't a right or wrong to it though. Personally I'm a fan of stainless steel fittings and wouldn't use aluminium or nylon bolts. I wouldn't use fibre or nylon washers etc either.

Presumably you are going to try it through the 'spares box' head amp first? Whatever follows will be an improvement so nothing lost

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
