    Default Speakers or Amp?

It's my 50th later this year and I think I might treat myself to some different kit.

My current set up is Sony TA FB940RQS or a Harman Kardon HK670 amp driving a pair of Boston Acoustic A26 stand mounters.
Trouble is I've always felt something is missing from the overall sound. I've got an old pair of Pioneer floor standers from the late 70's early 80's which, although I think they're nothing more than party boxes fill my room with enveloping sound far better than the BA's.

Should I upgrade my speakers to something like Kef Q300's or can anyone suggest anything else in the £400 price region.
Or….should I be looking to replace the amp instead? Perhaps a Marantz PM6005 ???

    What do you guys think?

A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

I would update the speakers . if you are on a budget roland makes the most superb speakers , in fact I don`t know how he makes a profit

this is almost in your budget and just beacuase there are not many reviews people are hesitant .
I had a pair of standmounts and they were superb

look up purity acoustics [ p.s I have no connection with roland ] and look at his feedback on ebay where there are some beauties

Good shout Phil. The guy who runs Purity knows his stuff and produces fab value speakers which seem very well engineered.

Speakers, no doubt. Now, what music do you like? What more do you want from your speakers?
Mana Acoustics Racks / Bright Star IsoNodes Decoupling >> Allo DigiOne Player >> Pedja Rogic's Audial Model S DAC + Pioneer PL-71 turntable / Vista Audio phono-1 mk II / Denon PCL-5 headshell / Reson Reca >> LFD DLS >> LFD PA2M (SE) >> Royd RR3s.

I mainly listen to rock & blues but also like to chill to something a bit more acoustic at times.
My current speakers just sound a bit dull to me and don't really fill the room very well.
They are very good with bass but I think they lack in the mids.

I would audition a pair of Q ACOUSTICS 2050i speakers.
smooth AND detailed delivery, a big, well braced and damped box delivering a huge soundstage.
easy to drive too....I get a pretty good levels on the end of my trusty NAD3120.
my son has a pair of 600 quid B&W 683s and they do not sound as nice...with a poorer build to boot.

I might be selling my PMCs in a few months if I manage to find something a little bigger to upgrade them to...

If I don't, then I could certainly highly recommend them and they can sometimes be found on eBay for not too far off your price if you are patient.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I'll certainly take a look at the Q Acoustics. My local dealer is an agent for them so it should be easy to arrange a demo. I'd also thought about what might be available on the used market too but I'm very wary about eBay at the moment. Things either seem tat, in poor condition or way over priced.

don`t buy then . get from established forum members who look after their kit . there is always wonderful opportunities to buy and demo stuff first at reasonable prices
