That's kind of what we had in the fireplace after the open fire and before the central heating. But the bars across the front used to rattle! And when I took it out, I discovered that soot had piled up behind it to just below the vent. A few more months and we would have died from carbon monoxide poisoning!

I suppose in hi fi terms a radiator is better than a gas fire. Lower noise.

Not with our pump, it's in the living room! I have built a false wall in front of it, but still. And a gas fire creates moisture, while central heating dehydrates, so we have to run a humidifier.
Anyway, I never minded the hiss of a gas fire, or the crackle of an open one. But the soot from the regular blowbacks didn't help.
