    Err, not quite:

Perhaps later versions of the plinth dispensed with the chamfered edges.

Actually I find it hard to believe the plinth was made of obsidian, which is volcanic glass. Quite commonly occuring in Nature, though not in pieces that large?

Reads like a load of hogwash to me Chris who would have thunk it, cleaning the bearing results in such an incredible improvement

Errrrr not really, If you look closely, particularly the right side as you view it, you may discern the chamfered edge on the image of what is most certainly a Technics plinth.
You are Partially correct with regard to the material intrinsic to the SH- series of plinths in that Technics developed their own proprietary compound containing powdered obsidian, the units were then pressure moulded and finished to a high lustre, were one unfortunate enough to chip the gloss black surface the body of the casting underneath the surface is a mid grey in hue.

    vs.

Hmmm - I'm not convinced, (looking at the left hand edge and the distance between the edge of the SP10 and that of the plinth), but I'll leave it to others to decide.

You are seeing a slight optical illusion given that the left hand side of the plinth is nearer the camera, look at the chamfered angle of the motor unit which continues into the chamfered profile of the obsidian plinth after the slight 1cm flat area directly in contact with the motor unit.

Barry, I am not entirely sure why you are being so pedantic on a subject that by your own disclosure is not your area of expertise yet continue to question my own affirmation that this ***IS A TECHNICS OBSIDIAN PLINTH***

Oops! It's simply that they do look different to me. Yes, it probably is an optical illusion - I'll say no more, save to say the obsidian plinth looks lovely.

Perhaps it's just an optical illusion, or the camera angle, but for me, the plinth on the left (from Krebsupgrade) looks rather more highly polished....

looks the same to me. there is a dark black section running most of the length which makes you think the side is smaller than it is on the left one

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Spend the money instead on further upgrading your 1210, as suitably modified, it has the potential to outperform any stock SP10. I know that myself from experience
    Marco.
I will give it a miss. I don't mind dealing with problems or throwing dosh at it but I think you guys are right - both the nature of the problem and the amount of dosh are unknown.

My apologies if that came over as a tad acerbic Barry, in certain lights and at certain angles.
