    I read somewhere recently that you can fairly easily adapt home XP to accept the embedded POS updates.

    Yes, I tried it on a copy of my 8 year old installation of XP Pro. It sort of worked, but I had some issues with screen resolution afterwards, so wiped it. I should try on a fresher installation of XP.

    Having a go at making a bootable flash drive with ubantu for an older laptop... No idea what im doing lol..first attempt was a failure doh... Trying againnn think i know what i did or didnt do right

    Use Universal USB Installer perhaps:

    Linux Mint might be easier to use.

    "Older laptop" has it got the facility to boot from USB?

    Think thats what im using. U usb inst 1.9.6.3

    Think the download i got was ubantu but if it works i could always change it to mint

    Yes it should boot from usb.. Its a compaq

    What exactly was the failure?

    Sometimes a particular Linux distribution won't work with some hardware.

    But if it's a very old Compaq, may not have the facility to boot from USB.
