I think I used a door bell vibrating contact system in series with a step up transformer that I wound, it was battery powered.I had one too. A small magneto that I put a crank handle on.

Tonight, a friend brought here her old Del 610 laptop. It was absolutely crawling with Win 7 on it.
I tried to clean things up a bit, but to me it was stll excruciatingly slow.
Decided to put Linux Mint on it, everything recognised, runs nicely, friend is delighted.
Was certainly easier that re-installing Win 7, various drivers, Office etc.
