It's like 'nouvelle cuisine'; there's so little on the plate, compared to, say, a take-away fish supper, or a tiny glass of vintage Cognac compared to a pint of Guinness: the former costs much more, so it 'must' be better. Few of us can disentangle genuine quality from the marketing guff, so 'Reassuringly expensive' often equals 'Overpriced tat".
In the final analysis, of course, an object is 'worth' what someone is prepared to pay for it, and material costs are beside the point.

Yes. I've been to a few 'fancy', expensive restaurants, where they serve you food on a roof slate (who thought that bloody stupid idea up?) or some other silly flat object.
