    Tape Deck: Tandberg TCD 310, fully restored and recalibrated as new, by RDE, plus upgraded with heads from the TCD-420a. Also with matching TM4 Norway microphones.

    Preamps: Heavily-modified Croft Charisma-X. LDR Stereo Coffee. Power Amps: Tube Distinctions Copper Amp fitted with Tungsol KT-150s. Quad 306.

    Cables & Sundries: Mark Grant HDX1 interconnects and digital coaxial cable, plus Mark Grant 6mm UP-LCOFC Van Damme speaker cable. MCRU 'Ultimate' mains leads. Lehmann clone headphone amp with vintage Koss PRO-4AAA headphones.

    Tube Distinctions digital noise filter. VPI HW16.5 record cleaning machine.

    Speakers: Tannoy 15MGs in Lockwood cabinets with modified crossovers. 1967 Celestion Ditton 15.

    It's like 'nouvelle cuisine'; there's so little on the plate, compared to, say, a take-away fish supper, or a tiny glass of vintage Cognac compared to a pint of Guinness: the former costs much more, so it 'must' be better. Few of us can disentangle genuine quality from the marketing guff, so 'Reassuringly expensive' often equals 'Overpriced tat".

    In the final analysis, of course, an object is 'worth' what someone is prepared to pay for it, and material costs are beside the point.

    Yes. I've been to a few 'fancy', expensive restaurants, where they serve you food on a roof slate (who thought that bloody stupid idea up?) or some other silly flat object. You are given miniscule portions of food given pretentious names and are expected to be in awe of the Chef's skills. What Cock!
