    Default better!

Ok so under the guise of " Hey Mrs saber dont you think the room would be better this way?" I finally have my set up out of the corner, only did it last night so not have much of a chance of a listen but so far so good.

The biggest change in the system is the amp, after the akai died on me, taking the advice of a forum member I grabbed a Cambridge audio A1 v3 from ebay.

Really happy with it, nothing leaps out at me, its unremarkable, but in a good way. Bass trebble and mids all seem pretty balanced, I think my DIY speaker cable is the weak link now, any recomendations would be greatfully recived.

Wish I could run Fm with it but sadly failed on that count, took the sanyo out of the system, Fm signal here is appaling, spoken to a few ppl and all reported much the same and with no option to have a proper outdoor Fm antena, I think the sanyo Tuner will go back on ebay.

Dropped the toshiba bridge too, will be looking for a better Cheep usb dac soon. I just swap the Laptop in and out when im using foobar or spotifi.

    Mostly just enjoying CD.

Reading the forums has me hankering for big changes but.... in the future. For now pretty happy with my simple system.
    Thansk Guys. Saber.

    Looking very nice mate.

Try some of the van damme blue series speaker cable, its very sensible money and sounds decent. Theres a tread about it on here somewhere.

Cheers zoidberg, I had heard thats name mentioned, it seems very well regarded for the money, also with my system really no need to go crazy with the cables. I will make another pair of cat 5s first though, I have some here anyway and I think ill use 2 cables and double the strands see what effect that has.
    Thanks

Interesting find, those Technics. How could Mrs Saber complain?

I'd try them a foot or more out into the room. Or did you already do that?

    Hey John,
nice setup mate can see your having lot of fun with it and enjoying the choons...which is what it's all about.

i use twisted Cat5 as speaker cable and it's the best I've heard with my speakers, even over some pretty daft priced stuff too.

Stuff wot I use is this....

Something to think about to think about when your doubling up the Cat5?

Hi guys thanks for the replys,

    Macca,
Actually I hadnt tried em very far into the room, I keep everything pushed back as I have a 4 year, but while he was out I have now tried them more into the room, and yep deffinately an improvement, vocals are even more impressively clear.

My first impresion of The Technics is I like them, I really like them, I always struggle when describing sound, but I was playing Waren zevron's desperados under the eaves and was just struck at how beutifull the backing harmonys are, like i'd not really heard them before, and its a track I play alot, its so clear, really clear and revealing The guitar harmonics on Van Halen's aint talking about love just ring out, but without harshness, it is lacking in the bass warmth of the Kefs I have but on Bob marley tracks the whole sound is just more together and not smothered by bass.

    I am really enjoying these

Gazjam, thanks for the link.Damn. why didnt I think of that! Near shreaded my hands pulling out the cat 5 from the sleaves, never though about plating multiple cables in the sleaves, im pretty sure I have more cat 5 around the place, so im definatly going to have a go at that. Ill probabley do a 3 plait weave as none of my speakers are biwire able at this stage

I think I got really lucky with these, especially as im doing things totally the wrong way and buying before auditioning things.

right im off to have another listen.
    Thanks guys. John.

Hello again, thought id do a little update, as ive had a bit of luck today, walking past a junk shop i spotted a B-tech bt26 for a £1 so grabbed it obviously, now my BSR deck had a major earth problem being linked to an amp, so much so I thought it was only playable through the build in amp.

I only plugged the b-tech into the amp thinking "even if i only get the same noise problem at least ill know there is signal coming through and ill keep it untill i get another deck.

The little £1 box only went and cured the bloody problem!! lovely warm detailed sound no ground hum , I am over the moon been playing records all morning.

Other changes, I took Zoidbergs advice and platted up some new cables, good call zoidberg, much improved top end clarity, bass is more solid. Total improvement.

Also swapped out the old sony dvd for a Blueray player, mosly because its a smart one and i now have netflix through hdmi rather then VGA from the laptop, even my wife noticed the diffrence in picture quallity even through my cheap tv is only 720dpi tv.

Only thing remaining for the moment is to find a way to have the Kramer tools transcoder tested so i can trade it for a Dac and im sorted, well untill the next change

Cheers for all the help and advice guys, Its much apreciated. all the best,
    John.

Been a little while, but done some upgrading, I wasnt going too but you know how it is
Saw this in a house clerance place in a system they said they were not going to split, thankfully they changed thair mind

Dual 506. Hasn't got the adaptor for a standard catridge unfortuneatly and wont switch between 33 and 45 with the switch.
I belive this is a common problem with non oem belts with these, but its still a huge upgrade over the BSR and I rarely play singles.
I will need a better phono pre though as its now worth it.
Obviously I grabbed the £4.99 magazine copy of kind of blue too

Next addition is the " giant killing, better than a £3k cd player, Audiophile beating ps1" lol

Ok so the claims made for these are pretty out there, I read about these a while ago, It's the mk1 sony playstation with the RCA outs, after I read all the crazy claims and saw the heavily modded versions of this online and thought "thats interesting" and I thought no more about it, and then found one for £15 not more than a week or too later in a cash convertor type place.

I gotta be honest, I think some of the claims for these are crazy.....but some of what I read does seem to hold up, it is very un-digital sounding, especially with jazz and Classical, and its really nice to listen to for long periods, and I actually do prefer the sound to my Denon cd player. It may just be coloured in a way i like, but id say for the price you can pick these up for its well worth a go. Would like to know if anyone is running one with very high end components.

I also grabbed one of these cheep chinese USb dacs. Big improvement over the headphone output on the laptop and i use it for Foobar and streaming spotify, for What i paid for it im happy with it, coax has been used more than i thought too running the output from my Blue ray player.

Thats it so far, deffinatly have an upgrade path I want to go down but thats a long term thing.

Very much enjoying the forums, although I still read 50x more than I post

    Thanks guys. John.
