Well this little gizmo is quite a surprise. The 6j1 valve buffer/pre-amp I'd ordered. The sound quality is remarkably good to be honest, very clear and open, no lack of body either. Gain is a bit on the high side for the Quad power amp it's connected to, but it should be spot on with the Monarchy Audio, which I have yet to try. I wasn't expecting much at the meagre £18 it cost sent from China. It even came with a UK power supply, which wasn't quoted as an included item.

    Not if I call it a pre-amp!

My Moth Series 30 pre-amp had a channel level imbalance which was pretty annoying at low levels, so I've bunged a new volume pot in. Also, being of too high an output for comfortable use with the Quad 306, I thought I'd up the resistance value of the pot too. It's now got a 500kohm item in it instead of the (non-original) 50kohm job and now the volume is far more controllable. Good result.

I've also cut the cable from the low voltage output side of the power supply and fitted a high quality four pin connector. That saves all the aggro of feeding the captive power supply and lead through racks or shelves. Much better.

Tell you what, this is a damn good sounding little pre-amp. It has a clean full bodied character and the bass is very tight. Extremely transparent too. Stan Curtis design, nice. I had a Moth Series 30 phono stage a while ago and that was outstanding too.

Just out of nostalgia, I want an Olson AM-395 integrated amplifier. Mega rare now, always were scarce.

I bought one circa 1971, after a disastrous experience with an Amstrad 8000 Mk.II (it was early days in Hi-Fi for me ). The difference was amazing. The little Olson actually made music and drove my equally impressive Eagle FR-65 full range drivers very nicely (the Eagles were actually rebadged Coral drivers and very nice, I still have a pair). The Olson was definitely my first Hi-Fi amp!

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

They were marketed in the UK by Tandy. Probably the equivalent of a Teleton SAQ-203.

It stayed until I bought a new Ferrograph F307 (another disaster! ).

That was very rapidly replaced by a Rotel RA-611. Bliss!

As I mentioned elsewhere today. I was going to try my Modern Tube Classics EL34 monoblocks with the Moth Series 30 pre-amp I picked up not long ago, as I suspected this might be a good match. They've been on for a couple of hours driving my renovated KEF Corelli speakers and sounding quite excellent. Very transparent combination this little lot. There's great depth and every distant tiny detail in the mix can be picked out clearly. Certainly no shortage of wellie either. Most impressed and it's not even the main system .

Couple of system photos from years ago.

    First one, probably around 1995.

    Second one, probably around 2000.
