I'd been keeping a close eye on eBay for a set of these or Eaton cones. Should be a fun project!

But they don't, it was just that I'd forgotten my Class A power amp like a few minutes to warm up. As the amp is warming they are sounding sweeter by the moment.

I swear that shorter throated compression driver in the ceramic magnet pepperpot Tannoys sounds better than the long throat one in the alnico jobs (yes I know the coil and diaphragm are similar). The imaging, mid and top on these is superb.

And what's this story going around, about horrible colouration with these first series plastic Tannoy cones? I have to say it seems minimal really, There's just a touch of it, similar the the DC1000 really, but less so. I was going to look out for some SRM or HPD295A cones to install, but I reckon treatment with a plastiflex type doping would likely remove most the of the colouration and the effect on sensitivity would be minimal. We shall see.

I reckon these sound better than a pair of similar sized System 1000 Tannoys I had a while back.

(yes, that is my Cheviots behind them )
Just giving these babies another bashing. First time in about three weeks. I'm playing 'The Last Days of Gravity' by Younger Brother at the moment and giving it a bit of wellie. You know, these Ascots sound pretty damn good regardless of the plastic cones, my little trick of adding paper damping pads to the cones is definitely working.. That pinpoint imaging is all there and so is the superb 'pepperpot' mid transparency. They have plenty of punch and the bass is surprisingly extended and tight. The replacement paper pulp cones (SRM 10B ones) should arrive this week and I have a few tricks up my sleeve to advance the sound further.

    Sounds interesting, Geoff.

You know, you should open an online business selling refurbished Tannoy's.

I could actually do that, but there's a fair bit of competition around so it's not going to happen. However, I'm prepping my workshop and stocking up on materials so I can turn out some scarce replacement Hi-Fi parts. I won't be specific for obvious reasons, but I've spotted a few gaps in the market. (why is Tufnol so bloody expensive these days?)

Also, I keep mulling over various tonearm designs and have bought materials for experimentation. This is something I've been intending to do for the last couple of years. You can bet anything I do come up with will be unusual and of course will be featured here (and receive some stick no doubt ).

A plug n play replacement for the 3009 tonearm cable sockets would be a good start...rather than those tatty ones on sale on the bay. I really need to take my deck out of service and do some things to it, but put it off time and again.

Interesting suggestion. Of course I'd have to buy one for evaluation first though. Shame I didn't keep any of those I've had.

I'm expecting my SRM 10B cones tomorrow. Hope they get here intact, then I'll post a little reconing project on here.

Ordered resistors for a -3db L pad just now. I want to be able to switch in a very small HF energy cut as needs be and the standard Tannoy Ascot crossover adjuster just appears to provide roll off. I don't want to use an L pad pot as there's usually an insertion loss which may be too much.

I'll be keeping an eye open for a pair of SRM, LGM crossovers anyway. I reckon the Cheviot II units may be suitable too.

The cones arrived today. They look excellent:

Started looking pair of LRM, SRM or Cheviot II crossovers now. I have put feelers out and am hopeful.

Well, Well. What do we have here?

Just unearthed from the walpurgis vaults. A pair of Tannoy HPD crossovers:

These should do the trick with the Ascot 2528 model drivers (soon to be 2558 SRM 10B units). I'll give them a good service/going over and change the component values to match my Cheviot II 3128 crossovers. That should work OK as the main difference between the drivers is the bass cone. The magnets, coils and tweeters should be identical (but I'll do a bit of measuring to double check anyway).
