Default Very large speakers... should they sit on the floor or be raised?

    Hi all.

Most of you guys know I run Tannoy 15" MG's. They are in big Lockwood cabinets, front ported.

A question... should large speakers like this be sat lower to the floor, or is it worth it to raise them. Now, a few years ago I had the Lancaster cabinets to which I bought some Something Solid stands... it was a superb improvement as the center of the the DC's were more at ear level. These cabs are much bigger than the lancs btw.

When I look at large tannoy's, most of them sit on the floor. So hence my question, would large cabinets benefit from being closer or on the floor?

I tried said experiment today.. I took them off the custom stands (which are solid) and placed them on the floor, the bass was richer sounding, mids were also a little more involving too. But putting them back on the stands the sound was a little more focused... not much in it but I didn't have time to start doing any fine tuning.

I'm in a quandary, both are great... but is there any reason Tannoy for example make their large speakers sit closer to the floor? Is the reason of being front ported have an impact?

    Just need a consensus...

    Jo

Down to whatever you like best and whatever appears to work best I reckon Jo.

Try in betweeny mode and put them up half way .. if the stands are 10 " then try 5"

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

Yeah, could try that actually, Grant... cheers

The stands are only about 4.5" anyways. So they are already very low.

I'd ask Lockwood or Tannoy for advice.

Most speakers are designed to be listened to on the tweeter axis but I don't know if that's the case with your speakers. When I had my Tannoy system 10s they said I should position my ears just above the tweeter.

If you like the extra bass from the speakers being sat on the floor, you could try tilting them back to try and regain focus.

If you do put them on stands they should be heavy #9 lead shot and fine white sand filled.
