I set up my router with an external HDD yesterday... a bit of a faff and the TalkTalk router isn't the fastest but it works fine.

What about upgrading the mains lead that supplies power to your hard-drives? Lol.... Hey, who knows?

First thing for me, however, will be to sort out a nice linear PSU, for the Pi.

    Marco.
I imagine the power supply will make the biggest difference and sure the one Paul will make will be special
I only had a bit of experience with different Ethernet cables when I used to use Jplay with a 2PC set up and yes there was a difference between CAT 5 6 and 7. I had spare 7 lying around.
I use a very different approach so cannot comment about how the Pi will respond but I suspect a small noticeable difference (in my case it made the difference to being able to listen to streaming to actually really enoying it) From my own trails I would say the connection is the key part to this. Once your P system has settled if you wish you can borrow the treatment (very easy to do) and see if it makes a difference.
From my own point of view getting away from USB is good as it will only get you so far. This is something I heard on Tony C super pc based transport

I have heard the difference between Cat5 and Cat7 myself and indeed i know a dealer who has a system set up to demonstrate the two very effectively.
    Main system : VPI Scout 1.1 / JMW 9T / 2M Black / Croft 25R+ / Croft 7 / Heco Celan GT 702

Interesting, chaps... I'll let the streaming system settle in a little (as I've noticed that the Pi-DAC has improved over the last few days, perhaps due to 'burn-in'), and get the linear PSU sorted before messing around with Ethernet cables.

What's the difference then between Cat5, 6 or 7? Speed of data transmission, or what? And are there 'audiophile' versions of Ethernet cables available?
