Default "Oh, we've got lots of vinyl too" he said...

So I was at a party last night and was talking to this chap (probably in his late 60s) and telling him about how I had recently been reunited with my record collection.

"We've got loads of vinyl" he said.

"Great - have you got a nice turntable?"

"No we haven't got one. Oh well we have I suppose, but it's all in boxes in the loft it's been there since we moved here 7 years ago. I doubt it even works anymore."

"Oh what a shame. What is it that you have in these boxes in your loft?"

"It's a LINN, and all the hi-fi is QUAD."

His wife corrects him. It's not a LINN but has a LINN arm apparently. Maybe it is an Acoustic Research, but then again no, the speakers are AR perhaps. They aren't sure. It is a floating suspension though. All bought from a by-the-sound-of-it-very-fancy hi-fi shop on Wigmore Street in central London back in the late 1970s I think. QUAD Pre/Power amp. Sounds like a QUAD tuner as well.

"Do you want to sell it?"

"Erm... Yes? Its very old though and we don't know if it still works so it cant be worth much."

    "You might be surprised".

Tentatively agreed that if I help them sell it all he will give me the turntable at a very cheap price...

So I am going to drop him an email and hopefully find out what it is he actually has and hopefully go and check it all out next time I am up here (in May) And I didn't even start on what his vinyl was (though I believe it will probably be a lot of very good quality jazz)

    to be continued...

I love Hendrix for so many reasons. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist - he played damn well any kind of guitar he wanted. In fact I'm not sure if he even played the guitar - he played music. - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Same here. Must get around to giving it a decent burial.

I just spoke to this guy on the phone to remind him I would be up in Wales in a fortnight or so and was he still wanting to offload all his kit.

The answer is YES, but sadly they want to hang on to all their vinyl, in case they ever have a way of listening to it all again, or transferring it to computer/

I was tempted to say "you have a way of listening to it in your loft"

Maybe I can introduce them to SPOTIFY and convince them that they should let me take all their vinyl as well....

They are hopefully going to get back to me with specs on what they have. QUAD amps and preamps, not sure what anything else is. Not sure what they want for it but I am going to have to go in real low as I probably don;t want any of the stuff myself, and can't see that I am going to be making much money on it anyway, unless they turn up as LP12 with a solid gold tonearm.
