    I'm Mark.

    Default Hello from North Wales

Should introduce myself now as I've been visiting the forum from time to time, but unable to post !
A few of you from the WAD/WD/A.T. forums will know me already . I'm a big fan of vinyl and valve-based amplification. I was into music and HiFi from the 80's but started building my own stuff in 2002 with one of the WAD kits. After that I got very keen ( still am ) and built more ambitious amps, then phono amps and speakers . Recently I've been putting together a 'final' speaker system ( horn/OB hybrid ) that has taken years and down a lot of blind alleys !

I play about 90% vinyl in the home system . I have a collection of about 1000 LP's . Most of it dates from about 1965 to 1985 , the 'core' material being psychedelic, late 60's-early 70's rock, 60's jazz, singer-songwriter and early 80's post-punk .

For the gear-freaks my system looks something like this at the moment : Denon 103R on Mayware formula IV on Nottingham Hyperspace driven by Verus rim-drive pod. Tribute step-ups into home built no-feedback D3a>D3a phono ; power amp SE KR300BXLS's driven by direct-heated 4P1L pentode drivers ; output transformers by Bud Purvine. Speakers OB bass/mid ( perspex baffle ) using Supravox 285GMF and Fostex 208Ez ; to be completed with Radian 745Be/Neo compression driver on Azurahorn above ( from ~800Hz) when I get the construction finished and two channels of bi-amping done ! Standby speakers ( often in the system on one side or other ) are 'Ariel' by Lynn Olson .

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Welcome from me as well - you're surrounded by loads of my family who live in and around Denbigh still... (There's one word my son speaks totally fluently - Llanynys........ where my roots are )

PLEASE take some pics and post them, as you've done some unusual things (rim driving the Hyperspace? ) and the amps sound very interesting to bottle-heads...

Hi Mark, nice to see you here.
“Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio”

    Welcome to AoS Mark,

Looks like the 'North Wales massive' is increasing in strength!

That's an interesting system you have: directly heated pentodes (you could be the first member we have to use those) and OB speakers. If you can manage it we would love to see some photos of your gear; I'm sure it would be of interest to the DIYers amongs us.

Admire your tastes in music - nice!

    Enjoy the Forum

    Regards

Thanks for all the welcomes. I'll try & put up a pic or two by the end of the week . Are there different forum sections I should use for an amp, speaker or turntable , for discussion purposes ?
