Default Hello there... I'm looking for some Royd minstrels

    Hi everyone...

I'm fairly new to the whole hi-fi game. I recently purchased a Rotel RA-960bx amp and I'm looking to buy some floor standing speakers. In particular, Royd Minstrels have been recommended to me... If anyone has any for sale (preferably Northwest UK) then feel free to get in touch...

Also if anyone has any good value turntable recommendations feel free to let me know! (£50-150)

    Welcome to AoS James,

I hope you haven't joined solely to find a seller of some Royd speakers. We would prefer it if you have joined to take part in our on-going discussion of music and the means by which it is played. What, for example, are your tastes in music? And what is your prefered source of music: download, CD, vinyl?

Anyway I hope you will enjoy the Forum - get stuck in with the discussions and I'm sure someone will come along soon to help you with your speaker enquiry.

    Regards
    Barry

    Hi James. Welcome to AOS.

Tell us what system you're aiming to assemble and what the music you listen to.

There are plenty of turntables to choose from in your price range. Start a thread in our Analogue Art section outlining what you expect from a turntable and your budget, then ask for recommendations. You'll get plenty of replies.

    Enjoy the forum,
    Geoff.

    Thanks a lot guys!

I think I'm looking for a system that'll cover all the bases and something I'm not going to want to upgrade in the near future! There's quite a a range styles I listen to a including blues (freddie King, Peter Green, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix), Classical (well mainly soundtracks e.g. Edward Scissorhands ... one of my favourite bits of music ever!), rock (red hot chili peppers, muse, queens of the stone age) and heavier/ alternative stuff too (Slipknot, nirvana, Mars Volta)

I gathered the Rotel stuff was pretty decent judging by reviews etc (although my first choice was a ra820 which I bought but turned out to be faulty!)... and the Royd Speakers for been recommended through a friend... I had my eye on some RR1's but at the moment I'm perceiving that the Minstrels are better value and not much worse than the RR1s in terms of sound (well... not worth the extra £250-300 anyway... am I wrong?!)

I'm a music producer and composer as a job and have a very good monitor setup in my studio so I'm just after some fun that makes the music sound good (obviously!) . Especially for vinyl and CDs... I have a an old Hacker GP42 which I've enjoyed but I'm after a more modern setup now... My initial budget for the whole thing was £200 but as usual it's gets bigger... I think the main thing is getting something I'm not going to want to replace!

I would certainly suggest you had a listen to a pair of Minstrels before you bought a pair. Some seem to rate them highly but I didn't like them at all.

Good luck with that one James. That's why this forum exists. Everybody ends up replacing things!

OK Neil (but it's purely as you've asked for it!!) ... This was quite a while ago now (there's more stuff on my youtube channel).. I've mainly been concentrating on recording an album of this stuff (and also composing for other people!)

Interesting, James, although the music's a little ‘noisy’ for me… However, you can clearly play the guitar. Do you ever do some stripped-back acoustic sets? ‘Eskimo unplugged’, as it were?
