Are you controlling technology, or is it controlling YOU?

Here’s the acid test… Switch off your computer, mobile phone, tablet, or whatever other electronic communication pish you’ve got, for just ONE DAY, and see how you’d cope…………………….. How much would you miss it???

Who wants to give it a go?

I can go weeks without using my (ancient) mobile phone, and if I didn’t have this place to run, I could quite happily live without a computer, or being ‘connected’, as it were. No Problem!

Imagine it if I did not answer the phone or any e-mails for one whole day, people phone me because their plug has not arrived within 24 hours of ordering, or they need to know if the fuse they just bought is directional, sadly I need technology to feed the wife and kids!

I sometimes wish I had no phone though!

I never answer my mobile, I keep it on 'silent'. If I see the occasional, rare, missed call, I text or ring back (if I feel like it). People have learnt that they won't get hold of me easily.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

It’s different if you’ve got a business to run, but does your average ‘Joe’ really need to be strapped to some form of technological device 24/7?

    I think not!

The thing that I used to love about mobile phones was their cost. If someone was not prepared to pay a dollar to speak to me - yippee.

Marketing and design awards again for Ikea, again I shouldn't wonder.

It's a truthful bit of marketing. Ikea's ad is designed with an intent of tongue and cheek but you can also see how pathetic the Kindle (and it's other cheaper bandwagon subsidiary wanky devices) really are. It does make you see that the simplistic thing about a book is that it's a book... not a device. It's fully open to mockery but for function it's still the best thing.

You can survive and even run a business without an iPad, you just need to organise yourself. Again, communication skills, self organisation together with self awareness has now vanished due to devices such as these. And the backlash to when they fail is that people get angry because the skills for dealing with such an immediate change in function have been depleted.

Giving kids iPads in cars for example and/or 'when they are out for a meal' is also simply wrong. I was out with my cousins on Saturday and two families kids had iPads. Tapping away, completely oblivious to what was going on or being said. It was really sad to see.. They are supposed to be gaining social skills. For me it marks a real tel-tail downturn in the next generation in regards to being able to communicate. It's not the kids fault, they will only do what their parents do or allow them to do.

IMO.. it's good for kids to be bored, it's up to the parents to engage more.

Another instance was the last time I went in the pub with a friend, most of the pub were 30-50 year olds, all tapping... nobody talking. We sat down and it felt like a doctors waiting room...

I honestly do think that some people would rather tap than talk.

Maybe we should start an AOS pub chain... now that! would be good... no such devices allowed... lol

My daily commute involves a half-hour bus ride in the company of crying babies, school kids learning how best to deploy their limited range of profanities and at least ten sets of leaky headphones. My only defense is to block out the whole lot with a half-decent pair of phones which give me excellent isolation from the outside world. Once they're in place, I can enjoy the view from the top deck quite contentedly.

a little from column a, a little from b. Nothing wrong with devices as they are just that...a device. children need to be envolved but they also need to enjoy things. if you really think they will get anything out of listening to adults prattling away your mistaken.
that said just giving them computers and abandoning them is wrong too... like most things moderation and eduction with carrot n stick usually works.
my 7 year old grandson was very pleased to announce yesterday that he had earned and saved enough to get a new game...it meant something more as he had been involved in the aquiring process...job done

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Ha - I like it, Shane! If you can’t beat 'em….

What if instead, in your daily commute, peace and tranquility surrounded you (well, one can dream) - would you still have your phones plugged in?

The problem for me is that I’m so used to living in a peaceful, quiet and stress-free environment, that any ‘din’ (such as you describe) immediately jars my ears, as it’s totally alien to me, and so I just can’t stand it!

Whereas, you go into some folks houses and it’s bedlam, so I guess they become attuned to living with a constant din (considering it ’the norm’), and therefore carry on behaving the same way in public. Thank goodness, I distance myself from that shit as much as possible.
