“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I really don't have many "feelings". Probably got a bit jaded and 'heard it all before' at my age.

I don't like hearing about kids & animals having a bad time, but most other things tend to pass me by. Unless somebody is 'out of order', then I may show signs of 'feelings', but most of the time I go with the flow and little bothers me.

Oh gawd, its not just me then.

Ronnie gets terribly exited about everything she sees wrong with the world and gets quite upset when I tell her that whilst I agree in principle, I really don't care that much any more. Caring deeply about injustice etc is for the young or those that can do something about it. I did all that and now want to try and relax and enjoy whats left - which sadly, is not that much.

You get to the age where you really have seen it all before and there is nothing about humans and their squabbles about bugger all important that surprises.

Sad maybe but true. Just leave me alone to play.

I'm with Ronnie on this one. Injustice burns and the burn never goes away. Propaganda goes like: 'its time to move on'. WTF are they on about with 'its time to move on' - Someone is missing a hand, an arm, a career, their children, their reputation. You don't move on from injustice. But it gets worse - think of all these "senseless" mass shootings we see. They are not senseless at all - they have wrong sense but they are not senseless. Here is a thought: For every Dunblane there must be a thousand cases that came within an inch of that.

i can't argue with the sentiment but really, once you get to my age, you have seen so much stupidity, violence, intolerance, warmongering and more, much more stupidity, that you just want to try and cocoon yourself in a little sanity. That means trying hard to ignore all the shit out there. I know trying to create your own little world is bound to fail ultimately but it has a great attraction.
