    Default Sad day for me

Yesterday and last night was a very long day for me and the missus.

Took my two doggies out for their morning walk as usual down to the paddocks. I saw a cat lurking in the long grass at the top of the field so did they and off went my two greyhounds to introduce themselves to it - at 40mph+ but the cat had plenty of time to escape over the fence. Nothing unusual in that as it happens fairly regularly and they chase rabbits too, so thought no more of it.

Next thing I know is Jenny limping back to me on 3 legs. SHIT! She severely broke her back leg around 6 years ago and it had to be glued and screwed back together again. I had to lug this dog everywhere night and day for 8 whole weeks until the break healed and was £1600 poorer too with the vet's bills.

Same leg, same joint yesterday, the bone had splintered and was sawing through her skin as she was hobbling along back to me. Had to carry the poor thing back home again. The vet said last time she has a weak heart due to her age and another dose of anaesthetic would probably kill her, so I knew what her fate would be when I took her to the vet. I then decided the kindest thing I could do was to put her out of pain and suffering and I have no regrets whatsoever over that decision.

    Miss her terribly today

Sorry to hear that Frank, very sad.

On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio”

thats very sad Frank. Always tough to make these decisions especially with an old friend...your consolation is it was the right one for Jenny.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I know it hurts but when its the right thing the dog is lucky to have you there with the balls to take the decision for her. I've had to do it twice now. Very sad.

Not good Frank . We had to get our old collie Rob ( a rescue dog who must have thought he had landed in doggie heaven when he arrived at our gaff ) put down 3 years ago . I still remember the look on his face when the vet put him to sleep . Feel for you mate .

Jesus Frank, that's terrible, she was really nice. (I met Frank's dogs). I'm so sorry to hear that.

    Frank,
what a terribly sad post. I really do feel for you and your wife. It's never an easy decision to make, but it's absolutely the right one. We've been through the same thing with two dogs and three cats, so I feel your pain.

    Chin up.

    Best wishes

Really sorry to hear this Frank. I know exactly how upsetting it is. All you can do is console yourself that the animal had a fanatastic life. I miss my cat loads even after two years almost.

No matter how old they are or how great a life they had, it always hurts when they go. You did the right thing, but it's so hard to do.
