I was really surprised I could still hear a difference on my small-ish computer speakers but this is what I heard - the Linn had great clarity but really pushed the piano to the fore, whereas the Technics gave a much more natural and balanced presentation where all the instruments sat nicely in the mix together.

Indeed, this is what I meant by 'musical'. With balance / naturalness, the musical message comes across. All the hi-finess in the world won't help. I don't enjoy very many modern systems as they all seem to strive to impress rather than just tell me what is going on.

EE! I was right! I was right! 3 is the Rega!

    Still glad I don't have a 1210.

And I still stand by my comments about 4!
I don't know how the original poster managed to make the SL12xx recording sound so broken - it sounded truly awful
The Rega recording certainly follows Gromit's account of his experience of the Planar turntables.

    Common sense isn't anymore!
