Yes, but the big difference is, even if you don't like the taste of real ale, it's (most often) a hand-crafted, carefully produced quality product, unlike something like Carling or Tennent's lager!

A lot of it is aptly put in those Wychwood brewery ads "What's up lager boy? Scared you might taste something?" They start drinking concoction of wet chemicals (Ta Alan) at 16 and become used to it... I had a good mate (now lost to the the big C unfortunately. Probably all those chemicals!) who drank nowt but Carling and we all used to rip the piss out of him for it. One day he said he'd try a half of real ale... He didn't really like it but said it wasn't as bad as he remembered.. We kept giving him tries of our different real ales and after a month or so he once again bought a half... To cut a long story short he was soon converted to real ale and after a few months he bought a Carling to see what he'd liked about it... "that tastes like piss! Bloody awful! how the feck did I like that shite!" etc came from his mouth... he didn't finish the pint of Carling!

I enjoy a good lager as much as I dislike a crap one. Therefore, British so called 'lagers' don't find favour with me. The British just don't brew a decent mainstream lager.

As for 'real ale', well it's OK I guess, if you've got a few paint brushes to wash out!

And that's the fact of the matter (or a decent any lager, IMO), whether you still enjoy drinking it or not. I'd say the same thing to folks who claimed to prefer the taste of supermarket ready-meals, compared with that of freshly made, home-cooked food!

Dont mind some if well used and looked after. I usually take a continental one tho. Tuberg on draft used to be very good, but again it needs pouring regular like most gaseous beer, guinness included, although not gassed as such. Dublin they literally never stop pouring for more than 30 sec in big bars

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

Or in the summer, doing the same thing (minus the fire) outside in a well-kept beer garden, admiring the view. *That*, for me, is where it's at!

Amen to that. In addition, our local (which keeps its real ales in kegs on a rack behind the bar - none of this pump-pulled stuff!) also has a mobile phone ban. If anyone's phone rings, they have to put £1 in a jar on the bar, which is given to charity when it's full.

Sounds like one of my locals. Me and the mrs drove past it many times thought it was a derelict building. Like going back in time in there. The pub became popular during the foot and mouth thing several years ago, as the potolers couldn't get to the mendip caves. There is a cave entrance in the car park , so well handy. They have branched out a bit more on food these days, the odd shep pie/chillie, but the main staple, is a cheese roll, or cheese and onion roll. local ( just up the road cheddar gorge) cheddar cheese, over half an inch thick slab, the onion even thicker. Nice with some local cider ( proper cider).

We used to have a pub like that here. All gravity fed barrels, no hand pumps and nothing under pressure. Sadly it has changed somewhat these days.
