Getting hammered on decent Champers .....

Not big on Champagne, as I think a lot of it is vastly overpriced for what it is, especially the entry-to-mid level stuff. Some of the top vintage varieties (Dom Perignon, etc) can be excellent though, but you're over £100 a bottle for those.

English sparkling white (which to all intents and purposes is 'Champagne', although they can't call it that) can be very good indeed, especially stuff from small, specialist producers, and is much cheaper than vintage Champagne.

IMO, it's WAY better than Moet, and up there with a good Pol Roger, so that's one for 'fizz lovers' to look out for.

Me? I usually much prefer a *good* bottle of Prosecco!

Is there much of a real ale scene in France, Alan? It's not something I've ever encountered during my travels there

I like real ales, but not too strong (as I don't like 'tasting' the alcohol), so max 6% Vol, for me, and preferably blonde or amber. Not really into the dark 'treacley' stuff.

used to drink tenants lager when younger a lot as it was best of the bunch when kept well. Funnily Harp could be good too but you needed a good cellarman for it. Funny stuff. Took a long time for continental lagers to appear. Still like Bud in bottles, but getting a taste for german wheat beer now.

I remember Tennent's lager, during the 70s and early 80s, with the dolly birds on the back of the cans - now *that* was funny! And in the 80s used to drink it as a teenager with my mates, just to get pissed on, but I certainly wouldn't touch it now.

In terms of the bit in bold, you're right, but remember that some of us have been travelling abroad to the likes of France, Italy and Germany since we were kids, and so from an early age, were no strangers to the joys of 'continental lager', thus developed a taste for it to compare with the shite here...
