i have to agree re fluid damping,it works 100% on the rock2,the difference with/without is very noticeable.

ive read up a lot since buying the decca,i would have to say all the hype about them being special is true,im very happy with mine,i also read that they can fail,i wonder if that still applies to rebuilt ones,i would like to think there is some kind of warranty once rebuilt.

Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of the Rock, I've had a Rock 2 and a Rock Reference. But I understood it, the fluid in the trough is mainly to damp out resonances in the cartridge and tonearm that would otherwise get in the way of sound reproduction. I've never taken it to be a device for modifying cartridge compliance. There are of course other ways to handle resonance.
good point tom.

The Decca International unipivot pickup arm was of course designed for use with Decca cartridges. It was a lowish mass device with fluid damping provided by a 'well' at the pivot. It worked perfectly with my Decca cartridges and sounded very good. The damping was specifically intended to give low compliance cartridges a means of properly articulating the stylus excursion. In other words, the stylus was provided with a load additional to the arm mass.
The arm also gave excellent results with other cartridges of any compliance, with damping adjusted accordingly.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

I have fond memories of that as a lovely speaker in about '73.
The only concern I have is the lateral radiation of the Kelly, I think it would be better turned 90 degrees.
