The newly released Alice Coltrane album. It's apparently culled from music recorded within her own Ashram. Think repetitive, hypnotic, religious chanting interspersed with the 'other worldly' sounds that Alice Coltrane is known for. Personally, I think she is one of jazz's greatest ever artists yet relatively unappreciated because of her spouse, her gender and her race. To me, she is one of the artists who transports me away from everyday life in to very beautiful, spiritual place.

If you don't know her stuff, start with 'Journey in Satchidananda' or 'Ptah the El Daoud'.

Was just reading this really good article in The Quietus celebrating her music. I'm a relative newcomer to her music but I'm fast becoming a big fan. A Monastic Trio is a superb record in my honest opinion. Will check out your suggestions, thanks.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”
