The Mars Volta are very difficult to categorise, you will either love or hate them. They are certainly thought provoking. Some I suspect will consider them pretentious or execessive. if anyone asked me who I would compare them with then I would answer "A modern King Crimson".

The Bedlam of Goliath is their 4th album, which I came across by chance and is my entry point to them, I have been told that their first De-Loused at the Comotorium is the best to start with, but I like a challenge. Bedlam is certianly a challenging listen, with lots of cross rhythms in places, with soaring hi and lows from the vocals. The dynamics of the music stretch the hi-fi big time. After a listen through once I would say the songs paint a picture of what the band say they experienced when on tour playing around with a ouija board purchased in a junk shop in Jerusalem. Whether true or just a clever bit of publicity the songs and feel of the music are certainly menacing in places and paint a vivid and intense frightening feeling of fear and control.

if you like a challenge and interesting music, get your pennies out.
Great choice Adrian, and very nice write up!
I have never thought about the King Crimson analogy but why not?
I have, and like, most of The Mars Volta albums but find it difficult to name a favorite. I see them as "listen through" works though.

The SQ i find lacking, however.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Aye Grant (you son of a bitch ) they are good!
First time I heard the song (on Radio Paradise) I thought it was George Ezra? Kinda similar sounding?

Kinda tripped over them by accident from my Tidal subscription, wondering if i was the last guy on earth to find out about them!

    Pitch Black - Filtered Senses

Recent Pitch Black album. Bass junkie stuff. The last minute and a half of Pixel Dust has some insane bass - if you have full range speakers at volume it will leave you thinking WTF? You will need genuine LF extension to understand it though. My 2nd system misses it entirely.

Default a bit of a croon.... and a raga

Both the above for £1 each, needed a good clean, both in pretty good condition, a little surface noise but a good listen.

Picked up this at the same time, needed a clean but is in excellent condition sounds like new, and whats more amazing music, worth hunting a copy of this out if you like aspects of Indian music.
Listening is the act of aural discrimination and dissemination of sound, and accepting you get it wrong sometimes.

Analog Inputs: Pro-Ject Signature 10 TT & arm, Benz Micro LP-S, Michel Cusis MC, Goldring 2500 and Ortofon Rondo Blue cartridges, Hitachi FT5500 mk2 Tuner

Digital:- Marantz SA-KI Pearl CD player, RaspberryPi/HifiBerry Digi+ Pro, Buffalo NAS Drive

Amplification:- AudioValve Sunilda phono stage, Krell KSP-7B pre-amp, Krell KSA-80 power amp

Output: Wilson Benesch Vector speakers, KLH Ultimate One Headphones
