Hegel Music Systems HD30 DAC/Streamer/Pre Amp is Rogliens (hifi-blog) Source of the year 2016

    https://rognlien.wordpress.com/2016/...the-year-2016/

The Hegel (HD30 DAC/Streamer/Pre amp), however, is a real bargain, pure high end as it is. The fantastic sound produced from any digital source, is up there with the very best at any price. When knowing that this full blood high end product is priced at around € 4300,-, there’s just no way I can avoid naming the Hegel HD30 “Source of the year 2016”!

HEGEL IN A NUTSHELL - Each thing can be found in other amps, but NEVER all three together. This is thanks to our patented SoundEngine technology -

    1. Damping factor - is basically a description for bass control. The higher the damping factor, the better the bass control. Modern amplifiers typically have lower bass control than they used to have 20 years ago. The reason is that the tools you use to increase damping factor will also increase distortion (next - 2). Not so in a Hegel amplifier. Industry average: 60-80, A really good amp: 100-150, 20 years ago: +/-150, Hegel: 1000-4000 Meaning: Hegel can boogie

    2. Distortion - is a description of the level of extra sound that is generated in the amplifier. Meaning sound that is not part of the recording. Distortion usually makes an amplifier sound either muffled or harsh. It will mask the finer details. Modern amps usually have fairly low distortion, and obtain this by sacrificing bass-control (previous - 1). Hegel have among the lowest distortion on the market, and it has it in combination with extremely high bass control. Meaning - it will sound incredibly dynamic, detailed AND smooth.

    3. Power consumption - The third benefit of the Sound Engine technology is low power consumption in idle. We are actually using up to 60% less power. Preventing the amplifier of running too hot, and it is good for the environment. The technical term is low bias.

Enjoy The Music reviews Hegel Music Systems HD30 DAC/Streamer/Pre Amp

    "A truly exceptional DAC!"

"Bass is wonderfully articulate, even down into the lowest reaches. When the source is up to it, like with "She's Already Made Up Her Mind," from Lyle Lovett's superb Joshua Judges Ruth (Curb), or the 2nd movement of Saint-Saëns 3rd Symphony (Reference Recordings), assuming your other electronics and speakers are up to the challenge of subsonic reproduction, the room pressurizes, with both a clear sense of speed and pitch solidity that is so accurate that you will be startled.I'm simply not used to hearing bass rendered this faithfully, effusively, or completely from a DAC, let alone one in this price range. It plays this portion of the audio spectrum accurately enough that it has the ability to trigger the "Fight or Flight" reptilian response. Because my analog system can create this sensation readily, I know it when I "feel" it. And feel it you do with the HD30!"

"It delivers an exciting and engaging sense of midrange bloom and body that is more shockingly reminiscent of really great analog than I had expected. This was very welcomed, as it created an incredibly realistic sense of physical size, location, and "space" as good as, or slightly better, than most any DAC I can recall hearing for nearly twice its asking price"

"This new Hegel further treated me to the most remarkable degree of extension, detail, and resolve in the uppermost octaves. Yet as rife with detail and sparkle as it is, this topmost frequency range is portrayed in an undisputedly relaxed fashion that is extremely captivating, again surprisingly reminiscent of a good analog playback system."

"But resolve is something at which the HD30 excels, and seemingly so effortlessly; in fact, at levels well above what I would expect in its price class. Honestly, based on its sonic performance alone, I would have put its price at $8000, or even $10,000! It is such an astonishing sonic over-achiever that I don't see this DAC leaving my system any time soon."

"The new HD30 flagship DAC from Hegel of Norway is one exceptional device. After living with it in place for some extended time, I find myself in full concurrence with Hegel founder Bent Holter's statements as to the significance of this product release in the Hegel constellation of devices. Its combination of exquisitely rendered tone (from subterranean depths to stratospheric reaches), complex and exacting texture, dynamic expressiveness (micro and especially macro!), relaxed, natural yet detailed, vivid, and comprehensive presentation, class-exceeding resolution, and spacious, focused staging and imaging, make it an over-achieving super star. All I can say is that you should not buy a DAC, not even at twice the Hegel HD30's asking price, without auditioning it first! It's your money, and you've been warned!"

"If you are a die-hard analog hound like me, or have just eschewed using a digital playback system for whatever reason (as I did until about three years ago), this may be the perfect time, and most affordable device, to get you into remarkably satisfying, enjoyable digital playback. The Hegel HD30 has changed how I look at (and listen to) DACs under $8000. I can't imagine you could find anything to quibble with at its price... You will be one satisfied music lover."

EISA Awards - Hegel Music Systems HD30 DAC/Streamer/Pre Amp is European High-End DAC of the year 2016-2017

"Built around a very select choice of upsampling and DAC chips, and with some digital wizardry of its own, Hegel’s HD30 is both a DAC/digital preamp and high-end audio streaming solution. This digital control centre offers eight digital inputs, including USB and an Ethernet port that allows the HD30 to function as a DLNA digital media renderer, allowing access to music over a home network, and supporting AirPlay. Moreover it can also drive a power amp directly via its balanced and unbalanced analogue outputs. Full compatibility with high resolution file types, including DSD128, is offered and all are delivered with remarkable impact, sweetness and detail. It’s our first choice for enjoying the highest quality sound without the clutter."

The HD30 is the ultimate digital control center. It does everything you can dream of, and does so with world-class quality. There is an abundance of inputs, ranging from balanced AES/EBU and BNC connectors, to Network and USB connections - with the latter also accepting DSD signals. The built-in volume attenuator allows you to connect directly to a power amplifier or a pair of active loudspeakers. Highly advanced power supplies and careful lay-out brings the noise floor down towards a mind blowing -150dB. In short... Do you even dare to try it?

When designing a digital-to-analog converter of world class, you are essentially making a masterpiece. One for others to try and copy. It is not enough to select the best components on the market and lay them out cleverly. When creating a masterpiece, you must question if you can make it better than the best. The HD30 was just such a masterpiece project. To reach goals that, up until now, was seen as unobtainable, we needed to tweak the world’s best measuring equipment available. Just to be able to fine-tune our clock crystals and power supplies. We designed master clocks from the ground up and went to great lengths to design ultra low noise power supplies and shielding from outside interference. The results are stunning. The musicality of the HD30 is at a level never before heard. You can experience instruments and virtually feel the room they play in. You feel the smile widening in your face and the hair rising on your arms when the HD30 begins to play. The finger touching the string, a millisecond before the guitar starts to sound. The singer drawing that breath of anticipation right before he starts playing in front of a live crowd.

Whether you choose to use Apple AirPlay, a CD-player, a computer or any other device. The HD30 will bring all the music and enthusiasm that exists in the recording.

"The Hegel H360 is simply a marvelous piece of audio kit. Its neutral tonal balance, articulate and lovely rendering of details, commanding power reserves, spacious soundstaging, and natural imaging are laudable. At $5700, as solely a linestage integrated amp of its quality and power output, it is a bargain; the included nice-sounding and versatile DAC makes it a real winner. I absolutely loved listening to the H360. I never tired of its low noise, dynamic liveliness, and winning musicality. A very easy recommendation."

"While some audiophiles may view integrated amplifiers as merely a compromise for those who lack the money or space for separates, this idea is becoming outdated, and there’s no better example of how much things have changed than Hegel’s new H360. It’s packed with features, extremely well built, and has a nice, unassuming design. Most important, its superclean sound and transparency will appeal to those many music lovers who crave detail and resolution. If you’ve got the money, you can’t go wrong with the Hegel Music Systems H360."

"If you need an amplifier "for life" - if you are tired of being half way there, if you need power to drive your speakers without resorting to monoblocks the size of a subwoofer, or you just want to have a 100 percent high end system in one box. The H360 is a must to listen to."

Hi-Fi Choice (UK) reviews Hegel Music Systems H360 amp/DAC/streamer

"Yet, in summary I want to change my sporting analogy. In Hegel combining its extensive know-how around lowering distortion, eradicating noise and preserving phase and transient timing, the H360 is achieving something that is much greater than the sum of the beneficial parts. It’s the effect of watching a truly talented footballer like Messi or Cantona on the ball – time slows down and skill just expresses itself beautifully. Music I know extremely well is refreshed and the artist’s intent becomes clearer. It’s not a matter of extra detail revealed, it’s just effortless, unhampered communication. The sheer cleanliness of the H360’s delivery means I’m better able to understand and enjoy my music"
“The integrated amplifier is coming of age again, and in the H360 Hegel has created a new reference product in its range that looks to be creating a whole new benchmark performance for others to try their best to match” Chris Ward Hi-Fi Choice (UK) - September 2015

Hegel H360 is a giant among integrated amplifiers. With 250 watts per channel into 8 ohms and a damping factor of more than 4000, it will control virtually any loudspeaker on the market. Thanks to the patented SoundEngine technology, this beast of an amplifier combines power, dynamics, finesse and musicality like no other integrated amp on the market. The connectivity is more of a bonus... There are balanced and unbalanced analog inputs. There is a Home Theatre bypass. There are optical and coaxial digital inputs, as well as a USB input for any signal up to DSD128... And, yes - it is also a streamer. Need we say more?

The core of everything Hegel is sound quality, and the H360 is no exception. The obvious benefit of the H360 is easy to see - power. It can deliver 2 x 250 watts per channel into 8 Ohms, and is stable even in lower impedances. Furthermore, the damping factor of more than 4000 makes certain it can take control over even the most demanding loudspeakers. The H360 will always play with great authority and ease.

Rarely is such power combined with finesse. However, specially designed power supplies driving precision volume attenuators contributes to an extremely low noise floor. Hand matching near perfect transistor pairs in the input stage reduces harmonic distortion. Our patented SoundEngine technology reduces over all distortion, and especially cross-over distortion. Our designers understand how transistors work, down to the atomic level, and have used all this knowledge in designing the H360.

The H360 incorporates a high quality DAC, using Hegel’s proprietary re-clocking. The benefit of this is that we can make everyday sources sound really good. Sources like a phone or a computer. This is why we have also included functionality like Apple AirPlay and DLNA streaming. There is also a reference class USB input, supporting all formats including native DSD64 and DSD128.

Soundstage Simplifi reviews Hegel Music Systems new ROST (amp/DAC/streamer/headphone amp) - the new VOICE of Hegel Music Systems

"A good example of the dialectic in action, Hegel Music Systems’ Röst is also a versatile, forward-thinking hi-fi component -- I can’t think of another integrated amplifier with connectivity options that address not only the needs of audiophiles, but also those of the custom-installation market. It looks interesting, it sounds great, and it has AirPlay -- to hear uncompressed music, you need only whip out your iPhone. It would be cool to add Pong to that list of capabilities, but as it stands, I’m satisfied with what the Röst already can do."

Hegel Music Systems ROST RRP £2200

Röst is the name of one of Norway's most beautiful islands. Way up north in Lofoten. About as far out from the mainland as you can get. The name fits like a glove. Röst can also mean "voice", and the Röst is truly the "voice of Hegel". With the patented SoundEngine amplifier technology, highly advanced preamplifier and delicately designed D/A-converter, the Röst sounds fluidly natural and dynamic. It preserves all the tiny details that create the feeling of being there, and delivers deep, thundering bass when needed. The Röst easily connects to any device you want - a CD-player, a streamer, a computer or perhaps Google Cast Audio? You can connect your iPhone, Macbook or even an AppleTV using AirPlay. Or maybe integrate a Sonos Connect? The choice is yours. Hegel Röst is designed to make everyday devices sound as good as possible, and to make audiophile devices sound even better. We achieve this using proprietary technology developed in-house by Hegel.

"After just a few moments of listening I had that joyous feeling that here was a competent product, one that enticed me to listen not just for the review purposes but for pleasure. So much so that my intended hour’s listening session turned into a four-hour marathon as I was tempted to discover more of my long-forgotten recordings. That’s probably as much praise as I can give any piece of equipment in all honesty, but to some detail…"

"Switching genre to the re-mastering of Supertramp’s Live in Paris was no less magical. An enormously wide soundstage ensued with a real boogie-factor from a full but never over-blown bass. This is almost certainly attributable to Hegel’s desire for an incredibly high damping-factor; once the be-all of amplifier design it went out of fashion but ensures the electronics have a real grip on the transducers from its impedance and not simply from power. A useful analogy I’ve heard quoted is the difference between torque and horse-power in combustion engines for creating a record-beating 0-60 figure."

"Winding up the wick to discover that the Hegel will entice the relatively inefficient Harbeth monitors into producing some serious SPLs to fill the room with sound, it’s time to tackle my large Apple music repository. I blast the neighbours by streaming some classics including Genesis, Phil Collins, Queen, The Police and Yello. Wow – not only is it just so easy to use an iPhone or iPad to negotiate the Röst’s controls, be it to change track or volume control, but this is a wholly effortless way to enjoy music. The resultant multi-layered soundstage had not only incredible width but amazing depth. Imaging was among the best I have heard at any price-point, and clearly a class-leader, creating a wholly lifelike performance. People like to hear comment about the speed of a system, well … the Röst is clearly no slouch: swift and punchy are the watchwords here."

"The natural warm-sounding Harbeths seem to really enjoy the partnership whereas some amplifiers seem to provide bass that is overblown and intensely warm. Here, I would suggest, is a really good combo for those seeking reproduction that’s as accurate as possible. I have heard systems played at shows costing ten-times, no a hundred-times the price of the Röst which were not only less pleasing on the ear, but less able to create a meaningful and realistic presentation (steady on! –Ed)."

"The surprising thing is that this is seen as an entry-level product in the Hegel line-up when I would herald it as something of a digital breakthrough. Used every day as my main listening amplification for nearly a month, it seems incredible value for money and a cinch to use. The degree of sonic transparency is to be congratulated while it has the ability to completely involve the listener in the performance. Bass-lines are tight and punchy, the midrange natural and combined with a sweet treble of extreme finesse. It’s almost as if much-more expensive electronics are in use, such is the level of competence it delivers. The name Röst appears to translate most accurately as ‘praised’: there’s no better word to describe it, other than perhaps high-praise. Here is a package from the Norwegians encapsulating modern design, up-to-date functionality and competent electronics."

"I confess I was struggling to find a way of describing Hegel’s Röst without using the ‘audio Swiss Army Knife’ phrase already well in circulation. Jet lag helped and I found the answer at about 4am as I jolted awake in a hotel room in Las Vegas: MacGyver! And I apologise profusely to the people in the adjacent room for shouting ‘MacGyver!’ out loud at 4am (I think they might have thought it was my safe word). But, the Hegel Röst fits that ‘MacGyver’ concept well, although fortunately it’s mercifully free from the late-1980s fashion sense of the original. It really is a ‘do anything’ kind of amplifier that – armed with little more than the tools it comes with out of the box – can work easily with absolutely any music source, and integrates with surprisingly sophisticated home network or home automation systems with equally surprising ease. If you think audio deserves to break free of the Man Cave, or even if you don’t and simply want a damn good amplifier with network benefits, the Hegel Röst is highly recommended."

The Röst is available in a smooth, white, painted, aluminium and steel chassis. Even the knobs are made of solid aluminium, and have the same comfortable touch. Together with the white, slightly dimmed OLED display, this is a unit you would easily have visible in the home. Ready to be used with your speakers or headphones. The Röst comes with a remote control, made from a solid block of aluminium, but is also IP-controllable and may be integrated in most smart-home solutions. If you have experience in writing code, you can get access to the IP-control table and write your own control systems. Note that we do not offer support on that.

It looks interesting, it sounds great, and it has AirPlay -- to hear uncompressed music, you need only whip out your iPhone.

We achieve this using proprietary technology developed in-house by Hegel.

    http://www.audiostream.com/content/h...TZfIqpYtSky.97

"The Hegel Music Systems Röst is a smart choice for people looking to buy one device that let's you play your stored and streamed digital music, music from other sources like CD spinners and turntables (you'll have to add your own phono amp), while driving any reasonable speaker and 'phones to musically balanced and delicate satisfaction. Dare I say that the Röst seems to be a smart choice for people who are more interested in the enjoyment of their music than their ideas about music reproduction."

Hi-Fi Plus magazine (Issue 144 - Alan Sircom) reviews Hegel Music Systems new ROST (amp/DAC/streamer/headphone amp) - the new VOICE of Hegel Music Systems

"It’s easy to see how many prospective customers will delight in plumbing the Röst with a network connection and a couple of other discrete sources to create a modern hi-fi setup that looks very elegant and understated but sounds extremely accomplished. The Röst looks and sounds great and is a joy to use."

Stereophile reviews Hegel Music Systems reference CD Player The Mohican

    http://www.stereophile.com/content/h...cfiOVkV0hE3.97

"the Hegel Mohican is unquestionably future-proof. It looks and feels extremely well built, and, most important, it delivers a quality of sound that would well serve an astute, music-loving CD collector for decades to come."

Hegel Music Systems reference CD Player The Mohican in Black finish

    Trivia:
The name Mohican is inspired by the novel “The last of the Mohicans” by James Fenimore Cooper. Written in 1826, the story takes place in 1757, during the French and Indian War. Now, the scenery inspiring this novel is found by Lake George in Upstate New York.

Hegel Music Systems reference CD Player The Mohican in Black finish

The idea of The Mohican has been with Hegel for quite a few years. Hegel recently found a note from one of their ”product development parties” (yes, you read it correctly) from 2010. It said ”we must make The Mohican. That final CD-Player. The best we can do. Include all those things we have learned since we made the first CD-Player back in 1997”.

Realism always struck like lightning afterwards, though. We couldn’t possibly devote the team to designing a CD-Player, when they could make AirPlay or whatever new cool thing. Or could we? The Mohican kept being brought up at every meeting, and finally in the fall of 2015 we decided. Let’s do it.

Let us not care what anyone says, what the excel sheets predicts or what competitors do. Let’s just make the best CD-Player we possibly can, within a realistic price universe. So we did, and here is The Mohican.

Hegel Music Systems reference CD Player The Mohican in Black finish

Hegel Music Systems reference CD Player The Mohican in Black finish

Thousands of people still own thousands of CD's. Some even prefer playing a physical disc, rather than streaming off their phone, when really enjoying their audio system. There is no lack of CD-players, but nowadays most of them are trying to be "everything". They should play SACD, have digital inputs, support DSD and perhaps even have an app and a headphone jack. The problem is that these functionalities not only drive up the cost, but actually reduce the sound quality when playing CD. For years, we wanted to do something about that. And finally it is here... The Mohican - for people who want the best from their CD's.

The Mohican is something as rare as a dedicated CD-Player. A dedicated CD-Player using the very latest in digital processing - adapted for CD-only. The results are astonishing. Several years ago, when high resolution streaming was in its infancy (but rising), a team from Hegel had a revelation. Listening to a CD-rig, we realized that there was a lot left in CD. Since that moment, there was a never ending debate in the office. Should we go all out, making that final - phenomenal - player? The name was the first thing we decided. It had to be called The Mohican, as in the novel "The Last of the Mohicans".

This is that super player. The Mohican. It is a true CD-player, using original CD-drive mechanisms from Sanyo, updated with our own designed servo boards. It has the newest and best DAC chips, working in native 16 bit/44.1 kHz resolution. It has the best clock mechanism we have ever designed. We use our patented SoundEngine to control the clock, forcing jitter down to levels we have never reached before. Perhaps the lowest in the world. But let us not bury ourselves in the technical details. What does it do for you? It plays magically natural. It sings... fluid and with great temperament, where needed. Compared to any other digital device we have heard, it simply plays without "edges" in the sound. Almost analogue. Do you dare to listen?

Soundstage reviews Hegel Music Systems new ROST (amp/DAC/streamer/headphone amp) - the new VOICE of Hegel Music Systems

The Ear reviews Hegel Music Systems new ROST (amp/DAC/streamer/headphone amp) - the new VOICE of Hegel Music Systems

    http://the-ear.net/review-hardware/h...-amplifier-dac

"After just a few moments of listening I had that joyous feeling that here was a competent product, one that enticed me to listen not just for the review purposes but for pleasure. So much so that my intended hour’s listening session turned into a four-hour marathon as I was tempted to discover more of my long-forgotten recordings. That’s probably as much praise as I can give any piece of equipment in all honesty, but to some detail…"

    Torque

Hi-Fi Plus magazine (Issue 144 - Alan Sircom) reviews Hegel Music Systems new ROST (amp/DAC/streamer/headphone amp) - the new VOICE of Hegel Music Systems

Soundstage reviews Hegel Music Systems new ROST (amp/DAC/streamer/headphone amp) - the new VOICE of Hegel Music Systems

    Torque

Hi-Fi Plus magazine (Issue 144 - Alan Sircom) reviews Hegel Music Systems new ROST (amp/DAC/streamer/headphone amp) - the new VOICE of Hegel Music Systems
