    I've been using cat litter in stands for 20 or more years and it works well. It is perfectly dry, so you don't have to go to the trouble of drying sand or shingle and once sealed inside the stand it poses no problems. It is easily obtainable and relatively cheap.

    I use lead shot in my speaker loading compartments. I bought 60kg of recycled yacht keel ballast (it was the best bulk price I could find) and put 30kg in each speaker. I could put more in, but it's a bugger without tipping the speakers backwards which I can't do on my own. The speaker cones go through the carpet into concrete and bass improved markedly in tightness and extension.
