One can never have too much music Barry (good ^ #3,000 post thread by the way)

Although when you start accumulating discs in the thousands, rather than hundreds storage becomes an issue, not just for the space but also finding what you want to play, which was a big consideration for my adoption of file based audio as my primary playback choice. My current addiction pastime is discovering new bands and with services like Spotify, Bandcamp, Noistrade (free music), Last.fm, YouTube and our Spinning Today, its far too easy to feed that addiction habit - but hey life's too short and there's so much music that really does deserve to be discovered

I find that quite sad , A mans life's work amassing the worlds biggest collection and no one wants it
It now looks like he has created a burden

    What a crying shame

Hope he can pass it on

It is a crying shame. It stirs up a lot of issues - obsession, human frailty ... It is a shame not only for the collector but there would be many people who would benefit if that collection became a Record Shop. I saw that clip about a year ago and felt slightly depressed.

Side note: I've just counted my LPs - all of them; 223 Classical, and 36 Pop. Total of 259 - no 260 counting the one on the player. So much for my earlier estimate of 150!

Hmmm! I wouldn't be to sure 'bout that. About 20 odd years ago a famous song plugger called "Waxy Maxy" had an address book with the home addresses of all the radio DJs at the BBC & the major commercial stations, this meant the could be sent records without the bosses knowing. When he died, his wife had an auction of his contacts and it sold to another plugger for almost £10k even then.

Out of interest our record collection now stands at about 3000 albums, 500 12" singles 2000 7" singles 800 CDs, SACDs, DVD-As, MiniDiscs and Blu-Ray audio discs and I haven't counted the cassettes and R-R tapes yet. On top of this we have about 2000 albums for trading. About 10 years ago we spent a week typing them all into a ClarisWorks database, and of course bloody Apple discontinued Claris and the iWorks replacement has no database. Claris won't run on the new macs and the Filemaker pro that has been hived off from the original suite, costs about £250.00 which I would pay if I didn't worry that future Apple "upgrades" might stop it working.

As our insurance company are now insisting that we list it all we have been looking at alternative cataloguing software. Viv and I both did a lot of research and found iDatabase a really intuitive, easy to customise program that costs a staggering €14.00, I would highly recommend it. Time to start typing again.

Paul, have you thought about buying a barcode scanner for the more recent items? They are very cheap, and everything with an ISBN code can be looked-up instantly online. If you use Discogs then you also get an idea of what each one is worth 2nd hand. Just scan it and add it to your collection and hey presto, no typing :-) Not exactly sure when barcodes became common, but most CDs have them and I think more than half of my LPs do as well.

Hi Lawrence, I have one and can also scan using my iPhone/iPad, I also have a bar code generator and printer , as we use these for my wife's collectables store. I did try it using the Collectorz.com software but I found that a pain to use and 80%ish of the early CDs were not recognised Most of our vinyl is 70s or earlier so no BCs there either. To speed things up, I have customised a lot of the database fields though, I have genre, sub genre, label, sleeve, insert and record condition, year and Value all on drop down menus. Here comes a few days typing.
