I think that the idea that as a species we are externally focussed, embracing all that life has to offer in an expansive way is illusory.
We all live I think in little worlds; think of Mrs. May, her world is surely in one of preoccupation with masses of data on economics and public opinion, and I bet she is frenetically pawing over it all every night.
Consider the devotion to cause of Arnie, training 3 times a day, eating six measured meals a day, and devoting himself to the one big challenge in his life, winning.
So I look at myself with my pursuit, as one lady described me 40 years ago, 'Playing with all my bits of wire', and think
'Is this an expanded emancipated life?'
I think it is in the human condition to deal with life in confined ways, focussing on specific things only; you can bet that mountain climbers and skydivers do.
