...and there are valid reasons for that, and it's got nothing to do with any audible lack of detail or resolution.

I had a demo a while back of a Micromega player and DAC together (can't remember the models) and the sound was fine, until the guy put the same album on his vinyl TT and then the whole thing just opened up delivering a huge soundstage in comparison. He returned to the CD and then the sound seemed as flat as a pancake. Fortunately, I don't get that problem myself, the vinyl and CD I use both work well when compared.
I agree, I think the micromega was good for its year 1996 and I have modified it a lot but I am sure newer cd players with more upto date dac's would excel the player. Maybe I could use it as a transport and use an external dac as you recommended.

That may be a good idea, aithough I'm not keen on the few modern DACs I've heard, a tendency towards a 'clean' sound but somehow not having much body. My Theta DS Pro Progeny is donkeys years old, but sounds very nice, as do all the older Thetas I've tried (even the little 'budget' Cobalt). I also have a Monarchy Audio M22B which sounds excellent. That is more recent though.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!
