My wife's a bit of an older/classic car fan and has set her heart on an older Saab 900 to replace her much loved but starting to fail Peugeot. I know zilch about cars so can't advise her, so wondered if any of you car heads know much about these or maybe have had one? They seem to be well regarded motors looking around the web. Anything she should look out for?

    Cheers

They were a good car. Fairly complex mechanically though and all will be getting old now. Parts are not cheap. It's an enthusiasts car and an owner would be best advised to do their own maintenance, as workshop costs will be on the high side.

Lately I've noticed a growing trend for used car dealers to ask silly high prices for run of the mill second hand motors. I don't understand what they think they'll gain. It's just going to put people off. It certainly puts me off.

    Here's an example I spotted earlier: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...esel&logcode=p

That's £1000 over the real used retail value!

    Here's another: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...Cnew&logcode=p

£1200 more than it should sell for. Crazy!

Mrs H had a problem with her X-Trail losing power (going into limp home mode) so took it to the local garage, who quoted her €5k to fix it. I laughed at the quote. This was to replace the fuel pump.

A bit of interweb browsing later and I find that it's a common fault, and more importantly how to read fault codes reset the ECU and out the car into the fuel pump learning mode without the Nissan software. The part I needed (new suction control valve) cost me €100 delivered. (Apparently the mechanic could not understand why I wanted to replace this valve when the new pump came with one anyway? )
An hour and a half of my time later and the car was fixed, giving me a saving of €4900.

I asked the Mrs if I could spend what I saved on the HiFi, but I am too polite to share her response with you.

“Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio”
