With diesel vehicles are not talking about global pollution but local pollution at street level.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM), sometimes also called diesel exhaust particles (DEP), is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols such as ash particulates, metallic abrasion particles, sulfates, and silicates. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometre range of 100nanometers, also known as ultrafine particles (UFP) or PM0.1.
The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles. Because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs.[1] The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the exhaust stimulate nerves in the lungs, causing reflex coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.[48] The rough surfaces of these particles makes it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation.[

As for battery cars..jeez, gimme a break. They are even bigger pollutants . Energy costs to make and break are staggering
Grant, I'm hoping you meant 50 mpg, not mph, otherwise it's not a very good case for diesels! Unless your motor was made by John Deere or Massey Ferguson.

My definition of performance cars (diesel or petrol) is quite simple. If it has been tuned for performance rather than for economy, it's a performance car. Much like hifi - if it was made with the intention to provide a faithful reproduction of music, it is hifi, regardless of how much it costs.

But as with many other things, I could be wrong!

Oh I don't know. It was Jeremy Clarkson who said 'no matter how fast your car is, everybody averages 50 mph' and of course, he was right. The only thing extra power and speed does is get you to the next tail back or other hold-up quicker.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

No you're not - you're 100% right! In terms of the bit in bold, *by definition* that's exactly what it is, not what someone's anti-diesel agenda would like it to be instead!

And mine has certainly been tuned for performance

Lol! Yes, I'd love one of those, but as I keep saying, where do you put the crates of wine - and how would I get my 85-year old father in the back??

If you've followed me properly during these types of discussions, Rodger, you should be well aware of the "Diesel Merc Taxi"'s raison d'être....
