An isopropyl alcohol soaked microfibre cloth removes most stuff IME... Once its dry a good polish with a servisol super 10 soaked microfibre cloth makes stuff look like new.
Tried & tested on 100's of amps & CD players, never had a problem.

Thanks again guys... I've ordered some cheap gold polishing cloth via eBay and if that doesn't work, it looks like it'll be the isopropyl alcohol suggestion - sorry for the single source - but any preference amongst this selection?
