Does that look like the right solution to you? Thanks for your help.

Hmmm dithering at 8bits, ideally you would have a 'coarse' analogue attenuator and then fine tune with a digital attenuator, which is properly dithered.
How much attenuation are you using in JRiver?

I have yet to hear any direct cd/dac/processor sound as good as one using a quality active line stage.

It depends on how loud the music was recorded at, but the loudest I'd have it is about 60% turned up; louder stuff or later at night looks more like 15-20%.

    I'm going to need a pre amp, aren't I

I've got some 3rd world debts to pay off before I can think about one of those...

Possibly or reduce the overall gain of your system, can you reduce the output from your dac?

I bet you know what the next question is... how do I do that?

    XLR attenuators?

Could the designer reduce the output, the Weiss dacs and Network players have a variable analogue output it is useful, you can have just the right amount of gain for your system and use as little as needed digital attenuation.
