Default Old enough to know better

    A brief word of introduction.
I'm Neil, and I have had a lifelong fascination with the reproduction of recorded sound. I've owned a great range of equipment over the years, some of it amazing, and some just amazingly awful. Classics included Garrard 301s - I had three, all different at one time; and LS3/5As - Spendor 15ohm, Spendor late 11ohm in the non-ply cabinets, Goodmans 15ohm, Rogers 11ohm, and even the Falcon homebrew kits; vintage Leak and Quad valve amps and modern single-ended; even a spell with an all-Naim system. All now gone! Today my key component is my Mac & Dac system which has made readily accessible my entire CD library, but now also includes all the material I accumulated over the years on tape and minidisc. I no longer have much interest in vinyl - the next project is to digitize the remaining LPs - though I still collect 78s, chiefly those from the 1902-1914 period with a particular interest in Russian issues. I have a Technics 1200 deck specially adapted to three speed to play these on, with a choice of hand-cranked acoustic gramophones to ring the changes. Repertoire is mostly 'classical'.

Hello Neil and here's a warm welcome to AoS from me.
It sounds like you've had an interesting time with hi-fi gear over the years. There is plenty to see and talk about here on AoS, so please, help yourself!

    Cheers

congratulations for this step! Like you I’ve had a lifelong passion for music and music/sound reproduction, and I also had collected and owned a lot of classic equipment over the decades. My music never has been more accessible and never sounded better since I made the switch to file-based playback, but without any doubt the gear and the media have lost a lot of charisma and haptic qualities. On the other hand, you’re not distracted any longer by rotating reel to reel decks or other similar shiny, flashing stuff. You’re much more exposed to the music itself.

    Welcome to this forum, Neil.

There are quite a few classical fans here. Feel free to tell us what you are playing on this thread! http://theartofsound.net/forum/showt...13134&page=140

Some hifi pics in the Gallery section would also be well received, without a doubt! http://theartofsound.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14

Wow, you certainly will be more knowledgeable than most members, certainly me! Alas, I think the advantages of digital are now too much for analogue. Iv'e gone the PC route for its options. I would love to know a bit more about the music from 1902 - 1914 Russia.
