    I'd be on the lookout for a Marantz CD50.

    You should be able to pick one up for under £50 and they are quite tweakable I've modded 3 or 4 of these and they respond very well.

    I've got a CD50, it's the SE version but I don't know whether that makes a difference or not

    On your link website is says:

    MARANTZ CD-50
    Philips TDA1541A - SAA7220P/B
    Philips CDM-4/19 Composite


    Don't know if that helps at all

    SE has a heavier base plate and a few different caps.

    CDM4 mech is very reliable.

    The Cd610 is a tda153, never heard any 1540 though!

    It's a Mono 14 Bit DAC chip..ie: Philips 'CD104'
