I've recently acquired a box set of vinyl records that are heavily dusted with perishing sponge foam inside the box. The foam residue seems quite sticky and I'm worried about the groove damage during cleaning. Has anyone got a good idea how to get rid of it safely?

How about attaching the soft nozzle with a brush on your vaccum cleaner and carefully remove the worst residue?
I assume the stuff is dry?
Then you sshould be alright with normal cleaning procedures, some pal with an rcm perhaps?

Thanks for your suggestion Mike. I've tried the soft nozzle on vacuum but the sponge residue is quite sticky and won't come off! I wouldn't put it straight through RCM as there's a risk of residue damaging the vinyl groove. Only thing I've found quite effective is good old microfiber cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol to gently dab the contaminated surface in order to loosen up the residue as a prewash cycle before RCM.
