SOP or standard operating procedure. The Americans would make camp the same way every time, the VC only had to learn this to exploit it.

edit -I should point out that you don't bury it, it won't work that way.

Be careful though - a favourite tactic of the Viet Cong was to creep up on the enemy position and turn the claymores around. Later when they made a full assault the American troops would set off the claymores and blast themselves. Probably beyond the wit of a cat but a Jehovah's Witness might just figure it out...
