However the only Sony deck that floats my boat is the 'TTS3000'

TTS3000 appears to be belt drive? The 2250 was DD.
The other contenders at the top of the DD tree alongside the Mk3 would be the Exclusive (Pioneer) P3a and the Denon DP100 although doubtless there'll be those who insist that the EMT950 should be there aswell. Not sure I'd agree with that though.

The looks are unimportant. That Sony PS-X9 is one hell of a purposeful beast. I'd make house room for it.
