Nice machine but MY OH MY....that price!!!!!

When I last bought one of these (an ex. BBC machine) they were selling in 1992 for £50.00 each and yes that was with an arm and base / control unit / line preamplifier.

Admittedly they are worth a tad more now - I would say one in this condition with the plinth around £1300 - £1550.

Silly Ebay pricing once again because they think it's retro and thus extremely valuable by default.

Lol, well, erm... Yes, but... They're BRILLIANT!

In all seriousness, though, the SP10 MKIII should be awesome, as indeed should the Sony, sonically. Pity it's as fugly as sin! I much prefer the Sony D/D motor unit, which was designed as a competitor for the SP10, I forget the model number - perhaps you could help me out?

Either that, or this baby (Sony PS-8750):

Stewart , are you talking about an SP10 MK 2 ? The deck in the OP is a mk3 , which is a different thing altogether and nobody has sold one for £50 I believe ? If only .

Oh Yes Marco, You are a man of great taste – The PS 8750 is a lovely dd turntable (One of my faves) never read a bad thing about one here or anywhere on the net, always said to sound lovely.

From what I've read, I think it was this The Sony 2250 found here http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgur...ed=0CDIQrQMwBA that was produced on a par with the SP10.

Despite the looks (which I think are cool, robust and purposeful) The Daddy is definately The Sony PS X9 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3587/...1b13b393_o.jpg Large 15" platter. Tonearm was a 12" model. It also featured a built in MC-PrePre and riaa-phono-preamp. When introduced (1977) it cost 2000 dollars including a very good MC cart the XL-55. Its sonics are said to be ‘very good indeed, playing in the champion's league of Direct Drives and the other components of the deck like arm and electronics keep this level, too.
A serious deck indeed, built with real intent that would most likely hold it’s own against most things you’d care to put it up against. Think Trio L07d and then some – A gorgeous rare gem. Here she is again http://www.thevintageknob.org/sony-PS-X9.html Stunning !!!!

    Spurt...

Well I'd definitely say that flogging my old PS-6750 ranks up there in my top 3 'you frickin' bell-end why did you sell that?' moments. Needed the £ at the time but should've hung in there.

Never seen an 8750, a few 6750's on eBay Germany though going for fairly serious (for an old deck) money.

I happen to really like the look of the X9 - almost Bauhaus in its stark appearance; pure function over form. The sort of deck to make young kids run away and cry.

    Hi Robert,

I like it because, for me, it just looks 'right', unlike the X9, which does nothing for me. I've never liked all-black T/Ts, as aesthetically they look too 'heavy'. The X9, for me, just looks like a poor man's EMT!

I much prefer contrasting materials, such as stainless steel or silver, of some description (such as the platter of the PS-8750), mixing with black. The engineering quality of both T/Ts, however, is taken as a given.

From what I've read, I think it was this The Sony 2250 found here http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgur...ed=0CDIQrQMwBA that was produced on a par with the SP10.
Yup - that's the boy! Again, I much prefer the look of that to the X9, as the wooden plinth provides a nice contrast against the rather 'sober' aesthetic of the motor unit. Do you see where I'm coming from? I've no doubt that it would also sound superb!
