This is a CLEAR preamp, originally offered as a kit via HiFi News/Moth Audio. As original, it comprised a standard EAR 834P moving magnet phono-stage, plus four passive line inputs (via Alps Blue pot) and one ‘tape out’, built by me about 13 years ago. However, a couple of years later, I decided to have the moving coil transformers fitted, and took it to EAR’s factory for fitting. After Tim De Paravacini opened it up, he proclaimed that it had been built by a blind monkey, and refused to let it leave the building until it had been completely rebuilt to his standards. The mc transformers fitted are 26dB gain (20x), so suitable for most standard moving coil cartridges. Button on rear panel to switch mm or mc.
It is housed in the standard black box used by EAR for their non-bling 834L line stage, which is slightly wider than the normal 834P, in order to accommodate the source selector switch. Printed circuit boards and electronic components are all identical to the commercial 834P, it comes with the original Edicron ECC83 valves. Not used for more than 8 years, selling for £325.
