    Day 1 disaster

    New years day

Went to a club that I am a member of and they had a spread laid on , need less to say to be polite I indulged

    New years late afternoon

Went to visit a friend and his family of 22 years standing

As I came through the front door I was asked a question

" Had any dinner yet Al ? "

My reply , " No I am having some salad when I get home -already in the fridge done "

Next thing I know a plate of boiled bacon spuds carrots peas pudding was thrust into my hands and the following comment made

" Get that down you " well not wanting to be rude how could I refuse

So restricted intake starts from today

Oh Lord. I knew it would be bad but not this bad. Weighed in this morning for start of diet and I'm a whopping 12st 10lbs. That's very close to the heaviest I've ever been. Need to lose 2st to be at racing weight . . . by April. This is going to be horrible.

Right then chaps, I started the Alternate Day diet five days ago. That's one day of normal (but not excessive) eating and one fasting day of 600 calories. The fasting days are hard, no doubt about it, but I decided enough was enough and I'm a diabetic so I can't afford to let my body go runaway - the consequencies are far worse than for a non-diabetic. This diet is supposed to help shock the pancreas back into better performance and mine could do with returning some function.

I'm 1.78m tall and weigh 88kg (I don't do imperial measurements). My target loss is 4kg per month so I'd like to be down to 80kg in two months' time, which would take me from over-weight on the BMI scale just back into the normal zone.

I shall report intermittently on progress but I'm hopeful of some good results.

    Group encouragement most welcome!

Good luck with it Martin but it doesn't strike me as being healthy or sustainable. As a diabetic you are dead right to be vigilant with your weight.

I'll race you to 80kg. I'm 81kg at the moment.

Seriously, my target is 70kg by end of April (my first race) so let's see who gets on best with targets.

Try drinking plenty of water on fasting days and I find chewing gum helps.

    I wish

    I am finding this tough

Always feel empty even after something to eat

I have cut down from 2 small sugars to one and now the tea and coffee tast like crap , Tried sweeteners and they are chemical tasting YUK

Have a few grapes when everything tastes yuk just to cheer me up

I was classed as borderline diabetic when I had a medical some years ago

I was told the older you get the less efficient your pancreas becomes at processing sugar I ate a snickers bar every day and had 2 big sugars in every tea and coffee x 10 a day , the doctor told me to go home and shovel 20 big sugars into a cup and see how much I ended up with , It was a shock

So for the last 2 years only a snickers bar once a month as a treat and down to 1 small sugar has for me returned my BSL to normal

Good luck with you quest Martin

    Hi Al

On the subject of sugar in tea/coffee, I gave it up a long, long time ago. Now, try not to groan at this: the best way to go forward is to give it up altogether, not reduce the quantity. Try very hard to drink your tea/coffee without any sugar. It will be hateful for about a week, but stick with it and keep drinking despite your reluctance.

What you will discover is that your taste buds will recover from the cloying overwhelming sweetness of sugar and start to taste everything more naturally. You will realise how varied and wonderful different teas and coffees taste. You will actually be able to TASTE your drink for the first time. You will never go back!

Thanks for the good wishes. Good luck yourself!
