I have a 3yr old bottom of the range Sony player picture quality via BR is superb, have you got your machine and tv set up correctly?.
If you Samsung tv is one of their budget lcd jobs then it could be that, you have to pay good money to get a decent lcd panel compared to plasma.

Well you haven't mentioned the BD player model... Or the TV for that matter

I still have a pair of Panasonic DMP-BD80 players (which I'll be keeping as they are multiregion on BDs ) & an Oppo BD95EU.

The Panasonic replaced a Sony S550, it does a much better job with both BDs & DVDs than the Sony picture wise & the Sony was no slouch.

The Oppo is in another league, but it is a £1K player

The thing is you are upscaling DVDs & the picture quality will be entirely dependant on the quality of the scaler.

While the Oppo did a vastly better job with DVDs than either the Sony or Panasonic, it can't touch a decent stand alone scaler picture quality wise.

The OP should search the net for the best settings for his particular TV model, most manufacturers out of the box picture settings are pretty dire, Samsung being one of them.
