    Agreed.

I used to be big into watches (before life and divorce intervened - to say nothing of getting back into hifi now it was safe from little kids inquisitive fingers) and was away from watch forums for over a decade. Back in the day (around 2000 or so) watch forums were for guys who, you know, liked watches. Most were ordinary blokes, well like us really, not loaded with cash or obsessively vain or into 'fashion' (as any bakeoff would attest!), but who were a bit nerdy about what was on their wrist.

When I went back for a look recently, I found that these days they are infested with vain little sods who are obsessed with unbelievably expensive push-bikes, boutique shaving products (for heads and legs mostly it seems ), man-baggery and other ludicrously expensive leather goods, and other 'luxury' show-off tat for those with more money than sense. This frequently makes up almost 50% of the 'watch' classifieds.

Of course it goes with the territory that the big watch brands have gone exponentially up in price chasing the super rich particularly in Asia, but it's an interesting phenomenon.

Hifi won't go the same way thankfully, as you can't flash a posh tonearm at the office, and as for bragging rights, nobody cares about the size of your LP collection.

Why the need for camouflage? Do you use it with a camouflage jacket, trousers and hat?

It just happened to be size I wanted.

I do own camo jacket, cargo pants and hat though. But never worn together. I'm no pretend commando.

    Yup. Hilarious!!

You see a lot of it here. The older indian guys with super unnatural black hair (and eyebrows). And even some who use Henna, which makes their hair an orange brown. Bizarre.

The one that makes me laugh is dodgy looking wigs. The ones that don't fit right or no longer match the greying hair remainder in colour. Seriously, how insecure must one be to wear such a thing? I'm always tempted to ask why they're wearing a funny hat!

Oh. And what about blokes who only take their hats off to go to bed? I've known a few.

I do own a pair of cargo pants, but only wear them when travelling. I avoid camouflage-patterned gear - with some of the places I visit it's not a good idea to have any military-looking items about one.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

I wear a baseball cap nearly always when out. My bald nut gets cold in winter and burned in summer.

My partner has encouraged me to wear a hat in winter, so I bought a trilby style hat. I don't like wearing hats in general: they get blown off; make your hair greasy, but I do wear a Tilley hat when travelling to hot countries.

The Trilby is not getting much use, and I'm not going to go down the cloth cap and Barbour route.
