I like the idea -in principle - of a gold standard broadcaster, publically funded so they don't need to chase ratings. In practice 90% of their output is an embarrassment to all those involved. And I don't mean it all has to be high-brow programme hardly anyone is interested in. That has its place. I never listen to R3 or R4 but I'm glad they exist. There is just too much of the opposite extreme; BBC1 is like a children's channel now, both in content and the way it is presented. BBC2 is going the same way. In fact if you put some of the educational children's programmes from the 1970s up against their current offerings for adults they would look high brow in comparison.

I always wonder why the breakfast show presenters (BBC1 and ITV) wear suits, shirts and ties. Do they really need to wear suits be taken seriously? Or is it because they talk so much Bollox that wearing a suit makes anything they say come over as intelligent and reasoned comment? I couldn't care less if they were wearing shell suits, come to that I wouldn't care if I never saw another breakfast show again.....however Mrs Puffin feels the need to be "educated" every morning....oh and it has to be ITV!!!.....Shoot Me Now!!!!

Never seen breakfast TV but I'm quite surprised to learn that the presenters don't wear shell suits.

I did watch a daytime news show on ITV once, it was indistinguishable from an episode of 'Brass Eye.'

If you ever chose to watch some of the 1st black & white episodes of Dr. Who you'll find they are full off 5/6 syllable vocab. I was 8/9 when I first shit myself over the Daleks but I understood every word. Far too much dumbing down these decades....

I have seen them and agree. Today the adult material is akin to the children's material back then, and the children's material now, from what I have seen when at my brother's, is awful pap-combined-with-dubious-social-engineering. Thankfully the children seem to have lost interest by the time the opening credits finish

    I think you'll find it's 'de rigueur'.

I dunno; kids today, what do they teach them at school, back when I were a lad [cont'd p.94].

Lol - if you're going to correct someone, then make sure you're right! In actuality, it's 'de rigueur', or at least that's the word any French person would use

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”
