And I don't mean it all has to be high-brow programme hardly anyone is interested in. That has its place. I never listen to R3 or R4 but I'm glad they exist. There is just too much of the opposite extreme; BBC1 is like a children's channel now, both in content and the way it is presented. BBC2 is going the same way. In fact if you put some of the educational children's programmes from the 1970s up against their current offerings for adults they would look high brow in comparison.
If you ever chose to watch some of the 1st black & white episodes of Dr. Who you'll find they are full off 5/6 syllable vocab. I was 8/9 when I first shit myself over the Daleks but I understood every word. Far too much dumbing down these decades....
