I always think of it as the "inside" lane since it is inside the motorway, nearest the crash-barrier. You join a motorway from outside, so logically the "outside" lane is the first one you join with the slower moving traffic.

Ah, you need to be careful then, as it IS known as the outside lane. If you ever get instructed (by the police at an accident site, for example?) to use the outside lane, you could cause BIG problems. Seriously!

But there is no inside or outside to a motorway as a whole. You don't join the motorway from outside, you just join it. The lane you join is the inside lane - there are also two overtaking lanes and the fastest is the outside lane. I'm afraid it's not a question of personal preference as to how this terminology is applied.

Is that motorways merging? If so, it's not uncommon, but I've not experienced actually joining a motorway from the right, as far as I recall, but then my memory is crap!
Back to pet hates; the M6 toll road. If you are in the overtaking lane, you could easily end up on it without meaning to. But if you sit in that lane all the time, then it would serve you right!

Never mind joining from the left or the right - it's the assholes who don't use the acceleration lane properly, and wank along joining the motorway at 50mph (or less), just because they want to sit in the inside lane, like an incontinent pensioner, holding you up in the process, when you want to zoom up to 70-80mph and enter that fast lane ASAP!!
