Oh my god! There's nothing wrong with the bidet is there?

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

There was suggestion recently amongs ornithologists that the birds commonly known as: tits, cocks, chuffs and shags, ought to be given less risqué names. Fortunately this rather pathetic attempt at Bowdlerisation never took off.

My view is that if a poster resorts to language that may be perceived as offensive by others, then that is reflection on the poster and his lack of eloquence. It will not be censored or removed by Admin, unless of course such language is used as an insult towards another Member. And in that repect, such language is in no way 'softened' by dyslexia or through the substitution of letters by other characters.

Understood Barry, and, to a very great degree, I agree, ...some 'latitude' is needed. I'm not after a draconian rule book, just some common-sense attitudes to others' sensibilities and treating everyone with respect and politeness. I can't see what's wrong with that. I'm sure none of us want a free-for-all.

When we regularly hear f&&&, c&&&, a&&&, b&&&&&&&, w@@@, S&&&, t*** on the BBC well before bedtime it's a bit difficult to draw that proverbial line. I think one can only be offended these days if it comes as a personal insult, though I must say some words still seem to me like they ought to be banned. Did anyone see the Brian Clough film last week, in one scene every other word was f*** or f*****g!

So far, everybody here has been treated with any "respect and politeness" due.

I wish I'd gone to your school, Richard. The biology teacher at our school made us learn all these long-winded Latin names, which were worth jack shit (pardon, James-faeces) when you got to the playground.

I myself have an aversion to using the c-word, so never use it ever. Strangely perhaps, I don't have a problem at all with other people saying it. And as has been said before, context is everything.

Bit like dressing in women's clothes at the weekend. I don't care if other people do this, I just don't care to do it myself. And if I did, I'm not saying anyway...

And well done to Joe for that very informative piece. See, there are some clever so-and-so's on this forum!

Don't you just hate it when you spend good money on a new scratching post, and the ungrateful little hairy bag of cat shit walks right past it to have another go at your sofa

Animals are funny things. I'll be watching the telly and the dog begs to go outside, then lays down on the lawn. The moment I go and sit down again, he's scratching at the door to come in. Quarter of an hour later he wants out again. He's quite happy to keep this up all day!
